Vehicle description
This is a super cool RV and I’m going to tell you why. First let me say that I bought this RV to take my family on a home school year off for my 11 and 13 year old. I really wanted a sprinter van type RV because they look sexier, but primarily because they fit in a normal parking space and are easy to drive. Then I found this quite rare 20ft beauty. It actually measures 20’6” bumper to bumper which is about a foot shorter than most long wheel base sprinter van RV’s. I have found this RV superior to a sprinter van typer for the following reasons: 1. It has way more interior room despite being shorter. 2.It has way more power as this particular RV is the sports car of all RV’s with a potent 400ft/LB torque being generated by a massive 7.5l Ford 460 engine. 3. It cost $40,000 less. We wanted a small RV as we traveled to the East coast and drove it thru New York City (be careful of those low tunnels), we also parked it in the subway station parking lot just outside of Boston. I can’t say how nice it is to be able to maneuver in and out of any place that has a normal parking spot. The Ford chassis is bombproof as the Electronically Fuel Injected 460 is one of the most reliable big blocks around, and it is mated to a 4 speed electronic overdrive transmission. I’m not sure why they put such a huge engine in such a small RV, but I’m glad they did as I enjoy passing large RV’s going up mountain passes like they are standing still. The price you pay for this power is relatively crappy MPG. I’m not sure what bigger RV’s get but if you baby it down the road in no hurry on backroads at 60mph you can get 11-12mpg…at it’s best. If you drive like my wife at 75-85mph expect to get 8-9mpg ( I often would fall asleep in the loft when she drove a long stretch and when we filled up I was always amazed at our crappy MPG when she was driving?). I think the gas tank is about 30 gallons. Everything works on this RV. Water pump, gas furnace heater, 5kW generator, fridge/freezer, stove/oven, water heater, shower, sinks, toilet, roof a/c and works well. New house battery and car battery last year, as well as new led light bulbs in all the fixtures. We love the laminate floor and having the kitchen in the back. My wife and I sleep in the loft while the sofa folds down for our son’s sleep zone, while my daughter gets the table area that also turns into a bed. Tires have about 50% tread left. Motor starts and runs great. Vehicle drives great and it handles like a normal van, although harsh cross winds will keep you on your toes. I’ve only used the shower once as it is so darn small…but it works and is custom trimmed out in metal siding. Comes with a cheap backup camera that is very handy for seeing what is directly behind you.
SO WHAT DON’T I LIKE: 1.The dash A/C will always keep the driver cool, but on really hot days the loft and rear of RV will get hot. On these days we turned the generator on while driving and turned on the roof A/C, of course this uses more fuel, but it worked well on our our July drive through the Mojave desert. 2. Never used the awning and I doubt it is in good shape…seems cheaply made to me. 3. The radio has nice speakers but the head unit is a bit dated. 4. Wish it had a tire pressure monitoring system 5. Big windows tend to rattle if they are not tightly latched at high speed. 6. Only used the microwave to store pans in 7. Front seats are bit soft for my taste
EXTRAS I DIDN’T MENTION: Bike rack on back ladder Aftermarket tachometer: Fyi it goes 75mph at 2400rpm. Wife additions like custom towel hangers and curtains etc. ., i"m not stereotyping as she can fix a sink just as well as decorate. Hate so see it go, but our season in done. Lots of adventures and miles to still be had. Enjoy!
