Vehicle description
1990 CROWN SUPERCOACH SERIES II
As living in cities becomes rapidly more and more difficult, the "Tiny Home" and "Skoolie" movements are exploding. "Boondocking" is becoming a new life style. At the same time, more and more people are getting highly collectible luxury vintage school buses and converting them to fabulous motorhomes. Due to their quality, durability, reliability and beauty, the older Crown and Gillig buses are in high demand. Now, more than ever before, increasing numbers of families are abandoning the traditional house, in favor of the RV life. We"re not talking about throwing a bed and a portapotty in the back of a tired old school bus, although that"s also very popular. We"re talking lovely, impeccibly designed and executed homes, that you can also drive. And the ULTIMATE brand vintage buses to convert are the Crown Supercoach II (like this one) and the Gillig Phantom. The Crown body style is breathtakingly beauriful, with strong horizontal lines, dark tinted windows, and strikingly graceful to the eye. With their velvet smooth 9 litre Detroit 2 stroke diesel V-6 engines, there"s no diesel engine made that"s smoother or sweeter sounding, that"s available in a bus And they"re world famous for durability. Crowns ride and drive like a luxury tour bus, not a rattly old school bus, and they last for many decades. The Crown body is almost all aluminum, so rust is not an issue. With unit body construction, there"s virtually no body shudder or flex, which protects the interior trim from coming loose and provides a solid feel and smoother vibration-free ride. There is simply no motor vehicle that stands out higher in its class than Crown Supercoaches. Crowns originally sold primarily in California and were priced over 40% higher than other new buses of the period. It goes without saying that if you want to create a beautiful new home out of a bus, the finest bus is the only way to go.
The Series II model Crowns (like this) were only built for three years, but are by far the best platform for conversions, since they"re rear engine and have HUGE under floor storage. The ceiling is 6"6", the driver compartment is expansive, the rear suspension is self leveling air ride, the giant Allison transmissions are incredibly durable and smooth shifting. The 9 litre 6V92 two stroke Detroit engine is velvet smooth, and has the sweetest sound you could imagine. No "truck engine" vibration here. You can travel many hours as a driver or passenger, and never get tired.
There were less than 200 Supercoach II Crowns built, and this is one of the very finest ones remaining. Originally a Clovis, CA bus (near Fresno in Central CA), it received the finest possible care. Clovis Unified School District is famous all over the country for their highest scholastic scores, superior curricula, most successful students, winning sports teams, and for taking the very highest level of pride in their beautiful campuses, flawlessly maintained equipment (including buses), and ratings in every category. Check them out for yourself. Like everything they own, their vehicles are always fully maintained, freshly washed and polished, and look spectacular. Not a single detail is neglected in any of their equipment. The bus comes with a rare owner"s manual. When any Clovis-owned vehicle comes on the market, people like me jump into the bidding quickly, since they sell fast. Owning an e-x Clovis vehicle is the next bes thing to owning a new one. Clovis Unified buses all are equipped with high output, bumper mounted foglights. The turn signals and rear lamps are all LED for brilliance, safety and durability. They specifify UV reducing deep tinted glass on all their buses. Also, the largest cooling system available, huge transmission coolers, the largest (12R22.5) truck type tires, and multiple battery systems with splitters and shutoff switch, for reliability. At thirty years old, this bus is in the condition of a well maintained 4-5 year old vehicle. It drives like new, with no wander or hesitation, amazingly few rattles for a school bus, and has mostly original paint, which shines beautifully. If you don"t plan on repainting the bus, when you buy it, I will have it professionally detailed with a spectacular resin glaze shine, for you, at no extra cost. The only reason I didn"t do that already is because if you paint it later, the repaint won"t stick well to the glaze. And, frankly, it looks pretty darned spectacular just as it sits!
To help "bring this bus alive" for you, my wife and I made quite a few YouTube videos of it, a few days ago. You"ll "ride" inside it and watch it accelerating, shifting gears and cornering, from the outside. You should be able to get a pretty good feel for what it is, but if you need more pics, videos or measurements of any kind, message me and I"ll respond quickly. You need to KNOW this is the right decision for you. So, its my job to get you whatever you need, to be certain.
You MAY need to highlight one URL at a time, copy and paste it on to your web browser, since EBay blocks clickable links on their ads. By all means, PLEASE watch the videos. A picture IS worth a thousand words! There are many of my other former and present buses on YouTube as well.

When I bought this bus, it had been in the hands of an excellent independent bus contractor for about three years. Although they cared well for it, I still found many things that could be better, from minor oil leaks, to suspension bushings, wheel alignment, engine tune, filters, oil, lubrication, brake adjustment, electrical relays, switches and wiring repairs, and myriad other things. I can document just under $4,000 I spent on this bus, at the finest Detroit Diesel and vintage bus repair shop in southern CA, J&R Diesel. I obviously don"t put a warranty on a 30 year old vehicle, but I am VERY confident that J&R did their job well. I have it back in the shop right now, for a few more details. It holds compressed air for a remarkable 24 hours after shutoff, it leaks the very tiniest amount of oil (rare on a Detroit! ), and drives like a very fresh bus. It is currently registered with California Air Resources Board and is LEGAL to register in CA. (Restrictions apply). It is totally smog legal in the remaining 49 states. The bus is plated in CA and on a non-op at the moment. I will provide you with a trip permit to travel where you live, if outside of CA.
I collect and recondition fine vintage buses as a hobby. But, I can"t keep saving them, if I don"t sell some along the way! This specific Crown is one of the finest Crowns I have ever owned. If you are the right person for it, you"ll never regret getting it!
My name is Al Jennings, and you can call me any time, 24/7 at 310-500-6574. The bus is located in Riverside, CA, about an hour east of Los Angeles, near Palm Springs. If you get it, you can fly into Ontario, CA Airport and I"ll pick you up at the luggage pickup, IN YOUR NEW CORWN BUS! I"ll give you driving lessons, teach you every detail you need for maintenance and operation, and we will have a blast! When you leave, you"ll be a confident and safe driver. Fortunately, it"s easier than it looks, and sitting in the Crown "throne" (driver seat) is about the most fun you can have sitting down. I drive mine to work sometimes, do my weekend shopping in it, and my grandkids and friends love it! With LA traffic as it is, I prefer to drive the bus over a car, when the traffic is bad. It"s so easy to see over the cars ahead, easy to change lanes (they scatter when they see your flasher! ), and much more comfortable than a car. Sitting way high in a bus also allows you to discover all the sights you can"t see in a car, since you"re sitting way above guard walls, other cars, and anything else that blocks your view. Your first time on a familiar road, you"ll be shocked how much better the view is from seven feet high! My wife has no interest in driving a bus, but strongly prefers to ride in our bus, than in any of our cars.
The vintage bus restoration hobby seems to bring together the NICEST and most WONDERFUL people I"ve ever met. I organize bus events around California, and we have the most amazing good times ever. There are MANY Facebook groups for both converted school buses ("Skoolies"), and for Crown Coaches. If this is the right bus for you, you will discover a level of driving enjoyment you could have never imagined. Oh. .by the way, I find women learn to drive buses faster than us guys do! They have a better sense of everything around them, and they maneuver the bus almost perfectly, after just minutes of instruction. Many women come to me intimidated, and drive off across the country confidently, a couple of hours later! Look at tour and city bus drivers. .mostly women! Guys get "hooked" pretty fast, as well! Particularly driving a Crown, the "Rolls Royce" of buses!
