Vehicle description
This low-mileage 1988 Ford F Super Duty is equipped with a Muncie hydraulic dump bed and a Meyer snow plow. I purchased it from a friend, the first owner, who had used it to plow parking lots before adjusting his business to focus on residential plowing. Prior to me purchasing and using it, the vehicle had sat, barely used, for a number of years, then sat for several more years totally unused, accounting for its low mileage.
The Good:
The plow hydraulics have been rebuilt in the last year. The engine has a new fuel filter on it, and a fresh oil change. All new copper-nickel alloy brake lines have been run. It has two new (American-made) batteries. Unloaded, the large diesel engine has such low speed torque that you feel like the hand of God is pushing you along when you take off. This is an older diesel vehicle, so you don"t have to worry about the blue nonsense or high-strung forced induction schemes. One of the fuel tanks is full, the other is at 3/4 tank. The vehicle drives and stops under its own power. It is not displaying a "check engine" light.
The Bad: Salt and sitting took its toll on the bodywork of this vehicle. Aside from the obviously faded and patchy paint, there is damage to the floorpan in the cab. The toolbox below the dump box had to be cut free as it was dangling, and is now in the bed. You can weld it back on. There"s also significant rust on the dump gate, and some small holes in the corners of the dump box. The parking brake is non-functional, probably from rust. When it"s on a hill, I chock it. There is a fault in one of the starting interlocks, probably the clutch safety switch, and starting requires jumping the terminals on the starting relay. That"s pretty easy, and I can show you how. The tires are dry-rotted and should be replaced.
The Ugly: The transmission will not shift into 3rd or 4th gear, with the stick refusing to even move into the position. Reverse occasionally doesn"t want to catch, but always works on the second attempt. This could be a small problem with the clutch hydraulics, a moderate problem with a bent piece in the shift tower, or a severe problem with the transmission. The wiring is also a bit problematic, with the headlights not switching on, despite the rest of the exterior lights working when selected. This is probably a problem with the wiring to allow the lights to be switched between the normal lights and the plow-mounted lights. For those few times I"ve had to drive it after dark, I have a wire under the hood to allow the headlamps to be connected directly.
