I bought a 1987 Ford LN8000 rear loader garbage truck around 8 years ago for my small business. Based off of the body serial number it is a Pak-Mor Model R200 18 Yard. I bought it from my neighbor a few miles up the road. He bought the truck new in "87. I used it a couple years but the plates and insurance were eating me up for only hauling away around 8 loads a year. I decided to convert it to a gooseneck trailer and use my Chevy Silverado 3500 to haul it to the dump. This has worked well for me, and saved a TON of money, but the local landfill in Celina, OH is almost full and will be closing down in less than a year. I found a self contained compactor dumpster and have started using it now. I actually miss the larger opening that the truck had compared to the self contained I have now.
The truck had hydraulic brakes, so I converted them to electric over hydraulic with a Dexter hydraulic actuator. I added a 15.5 HP Tecumseh Gas engine to run the hydraulics. It is underpowered, but gets the job done. The ram cylinder inside the truck does leak, but it only leaks after unloading the garbage at the dump. The other cylinders are ok.
