Vehicle description
This aircraft was donated to our charity, Wings of Hope, Inc, in September 2019. We subsequently found it to be UNAIRWORTHY and is being auctioned “As Is, Where Is” in Bountiful, UT (at KBTF airport). While the airframe and engine appear OK, the plane was modified from its type certification by moving the T-tail to a conventional position and bolting a 160 HP 0320-H2AD on the engine mount. All this was done without any known Engineering data so the FAA is unwilling to provide an updated Experimental – Exhibition category airworthiness for it. We have deregistered the N number with the FAA. This plane is being auctioned as a collection of aircraft parts. Airframe History:
This Tomahawk came off the assembly line on 7/17/78. Sometime in the 90s, Howard R. Murray went about moving the T-tail down to a conventional tail configuration and swapped the 115 HP engine for a 160 HP 0-320-H2AD engine. No engineering analysis was included, or is known of. Apparently it was flown in this configuration for many years, and sold multiple times, until someone started asking questions. On 12-15-2003, the FSS Phoenix FSDO issued an Experimental Airworthiness certificate for this plane as a “Howard R. Murray” TomaEagle PA-38-160, serial number 38-780447. This Experimental certificate was for Exhibition operation only. This meant that the Operating Limitations were very restrictive (small flight radius and annual forecast of next years flight destinations). It was donated to us at its current location, Bountiful, Utah (KBTF) very close to St Lake City. When we went to retrieve it, the SLC FSDO, would not provide an updated set of Operating Limitations as there was no Engineering analysis to support the major airframe and engine mods done to the airplane. It was suggested that we “deregister” the plane and we did. That’s why we are selling it as a set of parts. The donor reported the TT as Unknown since the logbook history is minimal. There is an annual inspection logbook entry from Long Beach, CA on 7/19/2016. Engine History:
The engine (Lycoming 0-320-H2AD, s/n L-1502-76) time is not able to be verified. We have a logbook entry from 7/19/2016 that says it has 1928.47 hrs TT and SMOH but that seems based on the recording Tach time that is also 1928.47. The propeller is shown as a McCauley 1C160, s/n 728906. Unknown Prop Total Time. Avionics: Bendix/King Nav/Com: KX-170B
Bendix/King Transponder: KT76 Current Status: In anticipation of a Ferry Flight, in October 2019, a Ferry Flight Inspection was performed and signed off. The details in the logbook write-up include; draining auto fuel from fuel tanks, cleaned quick fuel drains, cleaned fuel tank vents, cleaned gascolator bowl and cleaned carb. Screen. Cleaned and gapped plugs. Cylinder compressions were 70, 60, 62, and 75. Borescoped cylinders 2 & 3 showed no burnt valves. Drained one quart of oil determined it was clean and serviced with Phillips 20W/50. Ran engine, no oil leaks. Installed induction element BA4108. Damage History: From our research, it’s had 3 accidents/incidents: 12/27/78: Nose Gear Collapsed 11/16/86: Collided with a snowbank 10/2/05: Porpoised on landing in Long Beach and collapsed the Nose Wheel Auction Rules: We are selling this Piper Tomahawk in an unworthy condition, as a collections of parts, “As Is, Where Is”, with NO warranty expressed or implied. Remember, when you are making a bid, YOU ARE ACCEPTING and AGREEING TO A CONTRACT TO BUY! We have made our best attempt to reflect accurate information, but all information is SUBJECT TO VERIFICATION BY THE BUYER . Any Pre-Buy Inspections must be accomplished before the auction ends. Payment Terms: A $1,000 non-fundable deposit (PayPal or Credit Card) must be received within 48 hours of Auction end. Balance (via Wire Transfer) within 10 days of Auction end. If these terms are not met, we will move on to other bidders. Wings of Hope is the largest humanitarian aviation charity in the world and the only one staffed primarily by volunteers.
