Vehicle description
1978 Airstream Argosy 24” Vintage RV
Mostly Aluminum. Iconic, rare, Vintage RV
Bought it last Sept from an older man who kept it in a lot due to HOA restrictions. He was working on restoring it. Mechanically, it’s in great shape. Has ¾ mostly stock interior which is dated. I haven’t gotten as far as checking on any of the interior. Fridge is intact along with stove and oven. Bathroom complete and dinette. Missing the couch/futon? ? Most 12v still working.
It was broken into while at the lot, (a few days after I bought it, and was flying out).stole both batteries, and tried to hot wire it. Messed with the dash trying to access the ignition switch. Most of the dash instrumentation doesn"t work, ( It’s all there, complete, just not working) so, thinking it’s a common wire for everything, probably a ground. So, I had it towed to a shop, and they performed a leak down test. Replaced a couple of radiator hoses, 2 universals and I had them install a 3 gauge (Bosch) instrument panel. Oil pressure, Water temp, and voltage. The Oil pressure, Water temp are manual and bullet proof, so you can’t screw them up. The only thing that works on the dash is the manual stuff. Speedometer (which I suspect is a cable) and a vacuum gauge that is hooked to the intake manifold and tells you how (in the green) for fuel mileage. Pretty much a manual idiot light they were so fond of in the 70’s. They also pressure tested the radiator and it’s good also. Lights, turn signals, and brake lights work fine.
I drove it a 1000 miles home to Missouri from Colorado. I used the Odometer for MPG and when to fill up. Would get 12 mpg on the flats at 60 mph. Plenty of power, rides well for a 24’ motorhome. Rare, and is built on a 1 ton GM chassis so, everything is available. A lot of it off the shelf at Auto zone, or Pep boys or any of the other chains.
The Good.
Never hit 2 New batteries, 1 start, 1 house 2 New Universals All the tires are in great shape, solid, with no dry cracking and plenty of tread. Good solid 454 with 4 barrel carburetor, No computers, which is my nemesis. Auto trans that shifts solid and smooth. All the running gear is intact and in great shape Paint is good and looks to be original I had a leak down test and repaired what it needed. (see above)
4K Gen Set. Worked great, loaded well and ran perfect. It’s been acting up since it got cold. Needs a fuel pump or filter. Needs general service, but, not a big issue, just fuel delivery.
A great base for a restoration, and drive it while your putting it back together. There are a lot of followers, and clubs. Vintage RV clubs. Pretty rare. Vintage, and a unique peice of history.
At this price it comes with a Missouri Bill of Sale. I just don’t want to jump thru the hoops. I’ve not seen one go for less than 9k since I’ve been looking. Especially one you can drive home.
