Vehicle description

For Auction 1973 Airstream Land Yacht Safari 23 foot. This is a well-preserved piece of American History. We were fortunate to be able purchase this camper from the original owner’s Granddaughter. The Gentleman that owned the camper prior was very particular and kept everything to it’s original design. He had all the repairs done at the local Airstream dealer and kept all the receipts! We were excited to purchase this fine original Airstream 2 years ago as we love to camp vintage style. During this time our family grew and we have outgrown it’s capacity. While this camper could use a restoration, we did not have the heart to modify it from its original glory. So we are putting up for auction in hopes the next owner will be able enjoy this great original Airstream. We removed the carpet and the rear Belly pan cover so everyone can get a true idea of its condition. Anyone familiar with Vintage Airstreams know the belly pan and the carpet can cover up some major issues. This trailer does have some subfloor damage along the rear edge of the shell. The rear most cross member of the frame has almost rusted away. The subfloor has some minor damage by the door where the first layer flaked off due to moisture. These issues are typical of an Airstream of this vintage and can be repaired. I tried to capture all defects in the pictures. In the pictures of the underside you will notice that once you are past the rear most crossmember the frame and floor is in great shape. In fact, the original black paint on the frame is really quite nice past that point. The aluminum shell is really in great shape for its age. It does have some small dings here and there as they all do. The most noticeable being on the right rear corner. Luckily there is no major damage to the shell of this camper. Starting at the front of the camper it has a new side crank jack. It has twin 30 gallon aluminum LP tanks that are full with the new valves, and a new LP regulator with the automatic change over. The steps under the door fold in and out as they should and are solid when locked into place. The door and screen open and close as it should. All the windows open and close as they should. They all should get new rubber sealing rings as the originals are dry rotted. As you walk into the camper you will notice everything is in its original working form. All the original rolling cabinet Tambour doors open and close as they should. All the lower storage compartments have the original Airstream storage bins. Under the sink has the original storage bins one of which is the Silverware divided bin. All the 12 volt light fixtures operate as they should. The front roller doors open up to reveal the original Motorola radio with 8-track player. The radio and speakers work. We didn’t try the 8-track. The front pullout sofa bed still upholstered in its original plaid, could use some TLC. When it pulls out it seems a bit wobbly. I believe the screws holding it to the front wall have come loose. The two twin beds have the original plaid covers. One mattress appears to be the original foam type, while the other is a more modern mattress. In the closet in front of the bed is a good number of original Airstream metal hangers. The original accordion folding door in front of the beds open and closes at it should. The original curtains are in the camper closet. They have fallen apart and are not usable. We kept them so we would not lose the original hardware and measurements. There are also 2 bags of extra curtain sliding hardware. The Dometic refrigerator gets cold and the freezer keeps food frozen. It operates on LP or electricity. The Magic Chef oven does have some rust spots popping through the stainless steel. The stovetop lights up as it should. We never operated the oven. We were told that the water system was properly winterized after its last camping trip. With all the records in the camper I would suspect that to be true. The inlet hose was disconnected from the water pump. The water pump does turn on with the switch. We never used water system. I would suggest replacing the water heater before using the system. We did not attempt to use the original Suburban furnace. The Roof Air conditioning works great and does not make any funny noises. Roof fan works. The sliding door for the bathroom is a bit stiff, but it does work. Bathroom has original fixtures. The vanity, and shower floor seem to be in good shape with no cracks. The mirror is not cracked or broke and opens to a medicine cabinet with two 110 outlets and a 12v outlet. The mirror has a mark that goes across the majority of it. The bathroom closet door opens and closes fine and inside you find the Power Load center and an original Airstream battery charger. Has all 4 original hand crank stabilizer jacks. Tires are over 5 years old. We pulled the trailer on a 200 mile trip home, but I would not trust the tires on a cross country trip. Has awning but it needs replaced. Clear Iowa title with up-to-date registration. Comes with a receiver hitch and one of the anti-sway bars is missing but it tows fine without them. 2 5/6” ball. Any Questions or additional photo requests, please ask. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us before bidding. We will answer any concerns promptly and honestly.
