Vehicle description
Up for auction here is a really nice trailer mounted Hobart welder that is in unusually good condition for its age. I started it up and tried it out for a while and it seems to run and weld great and generates power for external electrical equipment as it should. It was built back in 1971, and was purchased by a local city agency for use in their water department. After all of these years, it still has only 1,379 original hours on it. These hours are documented in a thick folder that includes repair or maintenance work that was done to it. It shows that it received regular maintenance, even when it was in storage and not being used. Believe it or not, it even comes with a title! The registration is a government exempt registration, so if it transfers over and you decide to get plates for the trailer they may give you permanent plates for it, I don"t know. It is powered by its original flathead Jeep engine, model IPU 4L. (It has a tag that says it’s a Willys BSBI 1800 RPM.) I would imagine that this could be a valuable engine to a vintage Jeep collector! It runs like a top and is quiet and smooth. They put a really nice car type muffler on it, so it is really quiet and sounds like a small car running. It does not sound loud like a tractor, like many of these welders do. It is mounted on a super heavy-duty, custom built trailer with lights that has a newly installed 2” ball hitch that also has the option of removal for a pintle hitch attachment. It also has a retractable trailer hitch jack. This trailer is extra wide, so it is a really stable trailer for towing around corners or over rough terrain. The welder has less than 30 minutes on it since the city agency performed the following service procedures: new fuel filter, oil change with new filter, installed new hub seals, changed coolant, packed wheel bearings, and even checked air in the tires. The tires are in good condition with tread that looks almost new. It also comes with extra long leads. (One is nearly 70’ long and the other is nearly 100’ long.) They do have sections that have electrical tape presumably where the rubber was cracked, but look to be in good shape otherwise. This welder/generator even comes with its original oil bath air cleaner and large eye hook for lifting it up onto a trailer for transport, etc. The tag says that it is a 250 amp welder, but the metal indicator ring that lists what amperage you can set it for starts at 25 amps and goes all the way up to 325 amps, so maybe that is its real capacity, I don"t know. This is a very nice survivor from the days when they built equipment to really last. There is really too much to mention here, so take a look at the photos and if you have any questions or need more photos, just let me know, and I will do my best to answer them. If a buyer is not able to come pick the welder up, they can make shipping arrangements, and I would be happy to help load this welder onto a shipper’s trailer or hook it up to their truck and send it on its way. I will need a $250 deposit received within 24 hours of the auction"s closed, and the welder must be paid for and picked up within 3 weeks. Thanks for viewing this auction.
