This 1962 Airstream Overlander embodies Wally Byam, the creator of Airstream"s motto "Let"s not make changes, let"s only make improvements". The entire trailer has been gone through professionally by Gleaming Travel Trailers from top to bottom, front to back. Not one aspect of this trailer has been overlooked. To start this Airstream has excellent provenance. It was meticulously maintained and stored under cover most of its life. The Airstream has a journal log of every trip the prior owner took on a day by day basis from 1966 until 1999 as well as many other documents, receipts, title, and correspondence with Airstream. It"s extremely detailed and a true rarity.
The Trailer is 26 feet from tongue to bumper, weighs 4100 LBS and has a tongue weight of 400 LBS. The Airstream body is flawless. The entire front aluminum Alclad has been replaced, buck riveted in place, creating a patch-less trailer. The entire streetside lower panel is new and incorporates a seamless design. The entire frame has been POR-15 painted and is in immaculate shape. It had 80 percent original paint still on the frame. All perimeter underbelly wraps are new and the entire belly pan is brand new which has been clearcoated to prevent oxidation. The torsion axles are new and include never adjust brakes and easy lube hubs. New Munroe shocks as well as the tires and rims. It has vintage polished hubcaps with a globe center.
Polished 30 LB aluminum propane tanks. All propane components are new from the regulator, hoses, copper lines and fittings. New safety chains with adjustability to prevent the need to twist the chains in order to shorten. The Pex plumbing, ABS drains, Valterra valves, toilet, blackwater tank, plumbing fixtures, onboard water tank, 12 volt pump, city water inlet are new throughout the trailer. All windows are fully restored stripped of their paint and rebuilt with new glass, glazing, gaskets, and window operators. All windows have new prepolished aluminum interior trim. The jalousee windows were rebuilt from top to bottom utilizing stainless tubular rivets so you"ll never see rust drips on your windows. Hehr original vents are in perfect working order with excellent original operators and polished vent fan. The astrodome is brand new made from stronger material. All exterior lights are NOS or identical updated replicas which are now made from stainless materials and LED. The Zip Dee awning is in fantastic perfect condition. The entry door was fully rebuilt utilizing a prepolished aircraft grade aluminum with a UV resistant clear which requires no polishing to upkeep. The door also features a NOS Bargman door handle and a chrome deadbolt which ensure this perfect door will never open on the road. A new Airstream aluminum grab handle installed as well. Front dinette design is based off the original early 60"s design. It is as large as possible to utilize the space and converts into an amazing bed. It blends seamlessly with the original interior for a more functional front living area.
All interior aluminum accents have a UV resistant clearcoat and require no maintenance as well as provide ease of cleaning. All new 5-inch-thick extremely comfortable medium firm upholstery throughout. The front dinette cushions are perfectly sized to fit level and snug so that it feels seamless when converted to a bed. Countertops are new with a much more eye popping yet true to the vintage appeal white or light brown linen pattern. All wood interior cabinetry and drawers are in flawless original condition. The refrigerator is in incredible shape. The door is freshly powdercoated white which gives it greater durability. The inner door card is custom made of aluminum replacing the original plastic which inevitably cracks. It will now last forever. The oven is in excellent working shape and was refaced in the same linear brushed aluminum with a UV clear that is incorporated throughout the trailer. New AGM battery and inverter. All systems are either restored or new modern replacements such as an on demand hot water heater.
There are many more improvements made to this Airstream along with options such as a modern air conditioner that I would love to discuss to anyone interested. I have over 700 photos of the completed trailer that I can share via google photos and 100"s more documenting the work completed.
