Vehicle description

No Reserve 1940 Chevrolet Master Deluxe was purchased new in Beresford, South Dakota and remained with the original owner until the 1980s. It was then gifted to her great nephew, who repainted it in the original color and the refurbished the underside. He drove the car regularly and entered it in local shows over the following years until it was eventually acquired by the selling dealer in 2017. I have replaced the brake shoes, rear sway bar links and bushings, and the rear brake cylinders. A collection of records and literature includes WWII rationing coupons, owner’s manuals, service records dating back to the first oil change, photographs, and articles about the refurbishment. The car was repainted in Gulf Blue Metallic (272) in the 1980s. The fender seals and window seals were also replaced at that time, and the underside of the car was refinished. The Master Deluxe came equipped with Knee Action front suspension consisting of helical coil springs as well as upper and lower control arms. The color-matched steel wheels wear chrome hubcaps and Allstate wide-whitewall tires. The tan interior is upholstered in short-pile Mohair complemented by Walnut enamel and chrome trim. A vintage Cobbs Wrap-On certificate holder is affixed to the steering column. The instrument cluster hosts temperature, ammeter, fuel, and oil pressure gauges, a sweeping 100-mph speedometer, and a five-digit odometer indicating just under 43k miles. The 216ci inline-six features a single barrel carburetor and distributes power through a 3-speed manual with a column mounted shifter. The car’s serial number 21KH0524718 indicates it was assembled at the Janesville, Wisconsin plant (21), that it is a Master Deluxe model (KH) completed in May of 1940 (05), and is number 24718 in the production sequence. The trim tag pictured above decodes as follows: Style Number: 40-1517 (1940 model year, Master Deluxe Business Coupe) Body Number: J-2147 (Janesville, Wisconsin assembly plant) Trim Number: 97 (Standard trim, tan short-pile Mohair) Paint Number: 272 (Gulf Blue Metallic) A collection of paperwork accompanies the car and includes WEBB ration coupons, US gas rations, Federal Motor Vehicle Use Tax Stamps, previous registrations from 1945 to the present, factory books and manuals, tire service and insurance guarantees from the 1940s, state vehicle inspection records, a Phillips 66 spare tire invoice, the invoice from the first oil change from the dealership, and 1980s newspaper articles from the refurbishment of the car. Additional records from the seller are also included.
