Vehicle description
The MK4 Jetta wagon has been called the pinnacle of Volkswagen diesel development. We call ours "Blueberry", and it"s lived up to the MK4 reputation: reliable, enjoyable, a delightful car to own. This German-made car has never let us down.
A few highlights:
* Mileage - More than 50 miles per gallon (mpg) on the highway. At its last fueling, I calculated the mileage at about 47.8 mpg in roughly 50/50 mixed city/highway driving. That"s fairly typical. My best recorded tank was 58 mpg.
* Fun to drive - The torquey diesel engine still makes the wheels chirp. Plenty of pickup off the line.
* Extraordinary cargo capacity - In addition to the great capacity provided by the wagon layout, the vehicle has additional storage areas behind the wheel wells in the trunk, and a storage area beneath the trunk floor. And it still has a full size spare!
Enhancements:
* Skid plate - After a rock slide on I-80 damaged the oil pan, I installed a Diesel Geek aluminum skid plate (Deluxe MK4 Panzer Plate and FMJ Side Skirt Combo, with the oil change cutout).
* Lift Kit - Jettas start with about 4.5" of ground clearance. As the springs age, that can drop to as low as 3.5", with bottoming out becoming a potential problem. I added the KermaTDI 1" lift kit, which consists of aluminum spacers installed on the springs to increase the ground coverage. These are a great addition.
* High Flow Exhaust - Opening up the exhaust system helps the engine operate more easily and efficiency. The MagnaFlow stainless steel exhaust doesn’t just look great and help performance, it also eliminates the worry of the exhaust system rusting out.
* Chip Tuning - RocketChip manually tuned this vehicle, reflashing the CPU to increase engine performance and efficiency.
* Turbo - A larger capacity turbo unit increases the lifespan of what can be a problematic part.
Extras: The original mats, as well as all-weather mats, are included in the purchase. Diesel fuel additive will also be included; this helps keep the fuel from gelling in the winter, and cleans engine components. I also have a set of winter tires.
It should be obvious that I love this car. So why am I giving it up? Two reasons. First, my family"s outgrown it. The Jetta MK4 back seat is pretty cramped. It"s fine for little kids, but if you plan to put people over 5"4" or so back there, they will not be comfortable. Second, the body"s developed rust behind the front passenger wheel well, and on the trunk (see pictures). Given that the family has outgrown the back seat, I decided against investing in fixing the rust problem, and to pass this car along to someone else.
