Vehicle description
Alas my Jaguar station wagon has reached a point where the cost of repairs (at least while paying someone else to make them) exceeds the value of the car. I find it absurd and wasteful that this is the case, since the car still drives well, but there is simply no getting around emissions standards. The main problems with this car are as follows: 1) It needs a catalytic converter. I replaced one at great expense but the other needs to be replaced too. These are quite expensive, especially since using non-Jaguar parts is not advisable in this case. It may also need an 02 sensor on the same side (Bank 1). 2) The ABS light is on. It came on at the last brake job so I assumed it was a sensor at the wheel but apparently (according to the local Jaguar dealer) it is in the unit itself, which is fairly expensive to replace. 3) It leaks coolant at the water pump. I had hoped it was just the gasket and replaced it but the leak continues, so a new pump probably needs to be installed. Not an expensive or difficult job but would need to be done before driving the car any long distance. 4) The valve cover gasket needs to be replaced. It currently leaks oil into the spark plug cavities, which occasionally causes misfires. The suspension could probably use some attention too, although not urgently. It handles bumps less well than when I purchased it years ago. As for the body and cosmetics, I would note the following: 1) A snow plow raked the car when it was parked last winter, damaging the driver’s-side front quarter panel, as visible in the photos. Partly because of the color of the car, it is not terribly noticeable. Insurance determined that it would cost around $1500 to fix. 2) The windshield is cracked and needs to be replaced. 3) The headliner is sagging. 4) The clear coat is beginning to peal where the hood meats the front, passenger-side quarter panel. Otherwise the car is fairly presentable. The paint is respectable apart from the small area of clear-coat peeling at the front. The interior leather and wood are in good shape. All of the climate controls and other electric functions of the car work as they should. The tires have completed less than half of their life and have many miles to go. Given all of this, I would imagine the car will either go to someone adept at making the repairs himself or, regrettably, become a parts car for someone who already owns this rare model. And it is indeed quite rare: apparently only 1602 X-type station wagons were sold in the US between 2005 and 2008. I have never seen another on the road and I believe this is the only one on ebay at present. The car has a clear NY title in my name but is presently located in St. Louis, Missouri. I doubt shipping the car anywhere would make economic sense but of course I would be willing to work with your shipping company should you prefer to go that route. If you fix the water pump, you could drive the car anywhere, even a long distance. If the car sells for a reasonable price and you want to drive it, we could probably come to some arrangement about my having it done in advance of your picking up the car. Thanks for looking.
