Vehicle description
Head Turning, Head Scra tching, "What the. What. .?! " This is a 1982 Grumman Olson KREW KAB ! Let me start off by saying, no it"s not a Chevrolet. . it"s a Grumman Olson Built on a Ford 1 ton single axle chassis with a Chevy motor; titled as a 1982 Ford. Frito Lay corporation (based here in the DFW Metroplex) commissioned Grumman to custom build a few hundred Aluminum bodied Krew Kabs to pull concession trailers to events. This is not a cut or customized body - this is how it was built. If that"s not unusual enough, what few images I am able to find - then & now - no other Krew Kabs are built like this one. This one has bed sides, cargo boxes, vertical rear windows, and the bed is connected to the cab; others had a flat bed separate from the cab, a single window and no cargo boxes. This was a late 1981-1982 chassis, most were 1984 models. This leads me to believe that this particular Krew Kab may have been the original "prototype" or "test mule". If any old Frito Lay guys out there would like to provide any more info, I"ll be sure to post it on the Q & A section. As I mentioned before, being a Ford underneath, it was originally powered by an in-line 6 cylinder with a 4 speed standard shift. It now has a fuel injected Chevy 5.3 Vortec with full PSI harness and computer, l460e automatic transmission, Power Brakes, Power Steering and Cold Air Conditioning. New Exhaust. New Tires. No radio; I just put my bluetooth speaker on the dash. New owner could easily plush up the interior further or stick with the raw aeronautical vibe! The passenger seats flip up. 2 rock chips on lower driver"s windshield- not in driver sight. Always a Texas Truck, per Carfax- no rust. Drives and handles excellent - the high vantage point and 360 degree views make for a fun driving experience, yet at 17" it"s no longer than a typical short wheel base pickup! The possibilities are endless: Vintage toy or camper hauler, Tailgating with chairs above the boxes and ice in the cargo boxes, Attention getting promotional vehicle. .etc. The makeshift expanded aluminum "tailgate" is more for show, could be braced up and hinged properly if desired. I do not have a "buy it now" price and will let the auction play out - wouldn"t you ?! Texas Residents must pay applicable tax, title and license.
