Vehicle description

1990 Lotus Esprit Turbo SE. Approx 58,700 miles. Starts, runs, and drives very well. The turbocharged and chargecooled 2.2 liter I4 engine is capable of producing 264HP continuously and up to 280HP during maximum boost operations. This car was built during the period when GM owned Lotus, and as such is regarded as a turning point for the Esprit both in quality and performance. All engine management is handled by GM electronics which makes the car easy to diagnose and work on. It also means that parts are relatively easy to come by as GM used the same parts on many mid 80’s - mid 90’s cars. This car is also equipped with a GM supplied drivers airbag system.
The car has had a lot of work done over the years, including: -new timing belt, new thermostat, new tensioner bearings, reman water pump, and new accessory belts April / May 2020 -transmission rebuilt Aug 2017 -new chargecooler impeller Feb 2017 -new custom paint May 2017 -new alternator Apr 2019 -new clutch kit, new pilot bearing, new left rear wheel bearing, new clutch slave cylinder, resurfaced flywheel Dec 2014 -new clutch master cylinder and updated clutch hose Mar 2013 -various vac hoses replaced Oct 2013 -new AC compressor June 2011 -new exhaust manifold Nov 2013 -new drivers window motor and throttle position sensor Oct 2014 -new fuel lines (all of them!) You will have to install it.) -new front speakers Dec 2021 -new reverse light switch Dec 2021 -new LED bulbs for all exterior lights (except headlights, blinkers, and rear side markers) Dec 2021 -new black carpeting for the entire cabin (not installed, but included with car) -new black floor mats Dec 2021 -new black leather shifter gaiter Jan 2022 -new MOMO shift knob Jan 2022 -drivers door ashtray replaced with a cell phone holder Dec 2021 -both cigarette lighters have been replaced with dual USB chargers Dec 2021 -new tires May 2020

The good: The engine starts right up. There is no smoke, weird smells, or bad leaks. All warning lights work, none of them are currently on. The frame is in good condition. The car is fast and drives, corners, and stops very well. The paint looks great from a distance. The interior is in good shape with normal wear and tear. The new black carpeting, once installed, will really sharpen up the interior. The stainless door sill plates add a nice touch. The new fuel lines remove one of the most common causes of car fires for older vehicles.
The bad: The AC does not work. The previous owner said there is a leak somewhere. The central door locking system does not work. It was modified and then disconnected by a previous owner for unknown reasons. The speedometer does not work. I’m told this is an easy fix once the instrument binnacle is removed. This does not affect the odometer. I’ve been using a cell phone GPS app for speed reference. As expected on a classic British car, there is evidence of some minor oil and coolant weeping from a few spots on the engine and transmission (as previously mentioned there are no unusual smells or smoke when the engine is running). Both exterior door handles could use some attention, as they are getting difficult to operate. There are several Lotus suppliers that carry them.
The ugly: The paint has what appears to be acid rain damage and a bit of overspray in a few places. Neither problem is very noticeable, that’s probably why it’s never been corrected. From a few feet away the paint is gorgeous. I’m guessing someone skilled in paint correction could fix this in a day. The radio is finally installed and works great but the installation is a bit sloppy.
I prefer cashiers checks for payment. Payment can be made on the day of pickup, which we can negotiate. Please keep in mind that I have a busy schedule. I will do my best to accommodate you if you’d like to see the car, drive it, or pick it up after the auction ends but I can not guarantee to be available all day every day. Clean VA title. Car is driven on a regular basis so mileage WILL change.
