Vehicle description

Alfa Romeo Duetto. I bought this car about 6 years ago to restore as a nice driver. This is the 8th Alfa I"ve owned, and I"ve loved them all! When I bought it, the car was sound, but had the usual rusty spots; the rockers, rear wheel arches and the front radiator support needed some help. The floors had been repaired by a previous owner and were sound, so I left them alone. After disassembly, I braced the structure and put it on a rotisserie. The radiator support was remanufactured with 16 Ga steel that I epoxy primed internally before welding, it should outlast the next few owners! The inner and middle rockers were made from 16 Ga, again painted with epoxy before being closed up. The outer rockers and the wheel arches were bought from a company in I think the Netherlands that I found on eBay. I also had to repair a small hole in the spare tire well, it is all but invisible now. They were all continuous welded and metal finished. I stripped the external body, then epoxy primed it after massaging the relatively few dents and creases. I 2K primed and blocked several times until I was happy with the surface. I then painted it in the usual, and original, Alfa red single stage that you see in the pictures. After painting, I cut and polished it. I"m pleased with the result; the car is straight and shiny.
Mechanically, I had the differential, transmission, cylinder head and carburrettors rebuilt by experts. I assembled the engine with new pistons and liners. I had the crank, flywheel and pressure plate balanced as a unit. I replaced the brake and fuel lines, rebuilt all 4 calipers, new rotors and pads. The MC was resleeved. Other parts replaced were the fuel pump, correct fuel regulator, starter and generator and a complete exhaust with an ANSA rear section. I also purchased and refinished a sump guard, it should be visible in the pictures. I refinished the wheels and put new 165x15 tires on them. As you can imagine, I spent quite a bit on the mechanical restoration, but it was worth it. It runs very, very well. It starts easily, idles and revs smoothly, stops reliably and is a joy to drive, especially with the top down.
Electrically, the car has new halogen headlights and plexiglass covers. The old, original ones were too yellow to restore. I purchased new front parking lights and taillights from England. Very expensive, but the old ones were too corroded to work reliably. The reverse light on Duettos was also used on many Ferraris, it now costs a fortune. It wasn"t present, Its replacement is the smallest replacement I could find. As shown in the pictures, I installed an Optima battery that I keep on a trickle charger over the winters. The toggle switches are not original pieces, I don"t know where they came from, but they are very well made. I put a set of air horns on, it"s a cool sound. The electric horns are in place and were working when I installed them if you want to switch back. Everything works.
The Duetto bumpers and grille are stainless and were in good shape, they were reinstalled after a little polishing.
On to the interior; I purchased seat foam and vinyl upholstery that was advertised as coming from the original Italian manufacturer. I don"t know for sure that that is true, but it has the same feel as the stuff in all the Alfas and Fiats I"ve owned. I put the correct, new "curtains" in the rear passenger area. I had the Blaupunkt radio refurbished. It now has a jack for an Ipod, I haven"t used it. It is a period correct monaural AM/FM with one speaker. I purchased a complete set of new reproduction rubber mats for the passenger compartment AND the trunk. I spent a small fortune having the speedo and tach re- silkscreened, rechromed and rebuilt. I recovered the lower dash pad and replaced the upper dash. I made a new shift knob out of bubinga and maple and covered it and the Nardi wheel that came with the car in many coats of catalyzed clear. I had the Ebrake handle and the shifter rechromed. I installed a new fabric top and bought a nice original boot cover for it. I haven"t put washer fluid in the bag, so I don"t know how well the foot pump works.
As nice as this car has been, NO car is perfect. Even this one has faults, I"ll list the ones I can think of for you. The passenger door gap is very tight on the trailing edge, it has even caused a paint chip on the B pillar. It looks like there is enough gap at the A pillar to fix it, but I"ve had no luck moving it. The turn signals do not cancel. I"m not sure if something is broken or missing, but Alfas use a tapered, keyed shaft to mount the steering wheel. It"s a king sized pain to take it off to get to it, so I"ve learned to live with it. The accessories are live even when the key is off. Either that is the way they were made or the wire from the ignition to the fuse box is on the wrong terminal. I"m too old to lay on the floor to look at the base of the steering column, so I"ve learned to live with that, too. The wipers work well, but do not self park. There is a small, less than dime sized chip in the windshield. The heater fan squeals sometimes. Since the car is used on warm days, it rarely gets used. The top is pretty tight, but it sure looks good that way. If you find it too tight, it can be "loosened" with an hour"s time and some contact adhesive. There is a tear in the side of the passenger seat back side. I did it when I was installing it. I patched it, but you can see it if you look for it. See the last picture.
All in all, my Duetto has been a fantastic car to restore and especially to drive. It has held up very well in the 4 years I"ve been driving it. My buy it now price is approximately what I spent making it the way it is.
Sold as is, where is. I"ll be happy to work with a shipper. I"d prefer the balance after the initial deposit to be paid via wire transfer, I won"t release the car until a check has cleared and I don"t want the bank thinking I"m a drug dealer waliking in with that much cash!
