I have owned MGs for 45 years and this car is the best MGB I have ever seen or owned. Mostly restored by the last owner, finished by me, it offers the "best of everything." And everything I could imagine with a lifetime of MG ownership on and off the track.
First, the structure, excellent body with original aluminum hood, no plastic filler, new factory floors, perfect battery boxes, excellent trunk floor, spotless engine bay. All new interior with genuine leather seats, new interior panels and matching carpets, new convertible top, and excellent original red tonneau cover. Which possibly validates the presumed extremely low mileage of this car.
Rebuilt engine (original engine as best as I can tell as the engine plate is a "GB" which is exactly correct for this year), rebuilt SU carbs, new exhaust, just installed a rebuilt Ford T9 five speed transmission (for kit and installation, near six thousand dollars) AND WHAT a difference it makes. Converts the original 3.9 final drive (think "buzzy" at higher speeds) to a relaxed 3.2 making all of the difference on the highway. AND all synchromesh, close ratios, virtually indestructible, changes the entire nature of the car. You actually feel like you are driving a modern car.
Rebuilt and detailed suspension, all new brakes, AND I updated the hydraulic system to a dual master cylinder for safety. New shocks, tube in the back, improved sway bar, new bushings, chrome wire wheels (they cost nearly $1,500), new wiring harness, AND. . . . . . in that I did this car for myself without regard for expense, added a new wiring harness, alternator to replace the original generator, new radiator with a big electric cooling fan, Lucas Sports coil, and. . . . . . .
Electronic ignition, oil cooler with Aeroquip lines, converted to negative ground and installed a new stereo/CD, an extra outlet with USB outputs (for charging a phone), and then (as did on my other two MGBs) added a super powerful auxiliary heater which offers plenty of heat, this Winter, even down to 15 degrees outside. CHANGED the entire nature of my three Bs, on snowless but cold days, was able to drive them most any day in the Winter.
A premium quality Momo steering wheel, new three point harnesses, back up solid state fuel pump, on board trickle charger, racing battery cut off switch, remove jumper terminal (so one does not have to access the battery to jump start), I did everything imaginable to this car. And at a cost of over $30,000. But to me, worth it (did the same to my other two Bs) because the plan was to take a nearly sixty year old classic sports car and make it capable of duplicating the use and enjoyment of a contemporary car. Hence. . .the most powerful MGB engine ever fitted by the factory, rebuilt SU carb, a modern 5 speed close ratio transmission, dual master cylinder, improved cooling, hydraulics, suspension, brakes, a lot of 21st century electronic for reliability, and adding a multitude of add ons for a higher degree of reliability. In fact, due to a snowless Winter, drove it to work most days and never had a single issue over near 3,000 miles of back and forth to work, 300 miles weekend trips, was absolutely perfect.
The 1965 is the last of the early "pull handle" MGBs yet with the 5 main bearing engine, is in many ways the ultimate MGB. Can easily cruise at 90+ mph over long distances, is economical, lively performance on the proverbial New England winding roads, comfortable, great in Winter (with two heaters), great in Summer with a vastly improved cooling system, I am NOT claiming it is the single best MGB in the world BUT I do suggest it is the best one I have ever seen and you may agree.
A note about paint color. . is a beautiful Old English White, NOT "refrigerator white" as it might look. And goes very well with the deep red leather interior.
While I never thought I would sell this car, circumstances (namely acquiring another collector"s car) dictate the sale of this beautiful MGB. And with two other modified, 5 speed MGBs, I decided it was time to sell this gem. I have no interest (or need) in giving it away but, clearly, will sell if for substantially less than the cost of buying, preparing, and restoring a comparable car.
As to means of selling, it is for sale immediately, the perfect present for someone for Spring, Summer. . and year "round use. Can store it in my barn "till a buyer makes transport arrangements, willing to deliver it within, say, 300 or 400 miles, can assist in shipping it anywhere in the world. Look through or ANY other on line or print publication and see if there is ANY other B that comes close to this one. Probably not.
