Vehicle description
2020 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 High Roof V6 170 4WD. This van is on its way to being one of the most badass overland vans there is. It"s definitely NOT stealth. Everything already installed is of the highest quality. Unfortunately significant life changes forces sale, so someone who is willing to finish out the interior is going to get a very good deal.
There are currently two open issues that I just don"t have time to remedy at this point: 1) One of the Flarespace flares has a window opening that was made slightly too small for the CRL window that was supposed to fit in it. I didn"t find that out until after the flare was painted and installed. So I have a replacement flare and replacement CRL window that will need to be painted and installed. You could also trim down the window (it"s a fraction of a millimeter too big), but I was just going to have a body shop replace the whole thing.
2) I JUST (last night) pulled too close to a tree branch and it put a small dent above the passenger front door. Grrrrr. There is a photo of it enclosed - there is no paint missing, and the dent is hard to see, but it"s there.
I have decided to sell the van in its current state of completion (with a blank-slate interior ($92,000), and also SEPARATELY offer a package of all of the major components needed to complete a full conversion at a huge discount ($15,000). I purchased everything necessary up front since supply chains are unpredictable these days, and I wanted to make sure that I had everything on hand to complete the build. You can buy this van and the parts to complete it for at least $100k less than you would pay through a conversion company.
This is about as far from a “stealth” van as you can get. Expect lots of thumbs ups and waves from other adventurers, and people coming up and asking you questions at gas stations and parking lots. It’s a lot of fun, and the adventuring community is full of really nice people.
Whether you turn this into an adventure rig or a full-time living van is still entirely up to you. You can determine your floorpan and build it as simply or elegantly as you wish.
Sound Control The interior has had sound control and insulation completed including sound deadening, reflectix, sound absorber and 3M Thinsulate insulation. Special attention was paid to sound control. I’m a former car audio enthusiast and I finished the sound control like I would an audio competition car. As a result, it is SUPER quiet – SO much quieter than any other Sprinter I’ve driven.
Nicities & Options This van has all of the options you will want for a rig this size - radar cruise control, 360° cameras, backup camera, front bumper camera, swivel seats, 10” MBUX, crosswind assist, fully power comfort driver and passenger seats (they’re super comfortable for long drives), auxiliary battery for separate power for phones and tablets or a fridge, and USB-C outlets on the top of the dash and wireless charging. There is an aftermarket gear rail installed on top of the dash so that you can mount your phone, a tablet, a GPS tracker or whatever else you’d like.
Overlanding components You can see the list of components below. No expense was spared on this build - the absolute best and most reliable components were chosen, and everything so far has been installed by either the manufacturer themselves or one of their authorized installers. I traveled to Owl Vans in California to have all of the Owl components installed, Roambuilt in Portland, OR installed the roof rack, and The Van Compass 4.3 suspension was installed by Suspension Specialities in Bend, Oregon.
Power System (available separately as part of the finishing package) I’m going to get a bit geeky here for a minute… The power system (sold separately) is state of the art. It has been designed to never require shore power and be fully self-contained. Since I was planning on taking this van to Central America, I couldn’t count on regular stops or campgrounds. The system consists of a second alternator dedicated to charging a Victron 800Ah LiFEPo4 battery bank at 280A through a Wakespeed regulator. Everything is fully synced through CANbus communication, so there is no fear of the alternator overcharging or getting cut off and failing. The solar panels are the best that you can buy. They are Solaria Power XT 400W panels. Two of them fit nicely on the roof providing 800W of solar charging. All of these components are included.
Climate Control (available separately as part of the finishing package) The ProAir 12v A/C can run at 20,000 BTUs - far greater than any 12V roof-mounted system for vans. Also, it doesn’t take up precious rooftop space that can then be used for solar panels.
