Track Attack prototype #2 started life in late 2010 as a Superspeedway chassis for the Hendrick Motorsports number 5 Cup team. It raced in eight events between Daytona and Talladega, starting on the pole twice and finishing in the top-10 five times. It was retired from competition at the conclusion of the 2012 season and put in storage.
In August 2019 work began on chassis 5-632 to convert it to the first LSX powered Track Attack prototype. It was blasted to bare metal, thoroughly inspected, then converted to road course configuration. It was rebodied with a new 2019 Camaro ZL1 body and painted Axalta code 56 Corvette bright yellow with flat black graphics added.
It is powered by a Chevrolet Performance LSX454 with cam, intake and valvetrain upgrades that allow the engine to produce approximately 700 horsepower and over 600 ft. pounds of torque. It has an oil scavenge pump system installed which provides proper lubrication during high-speed cornering, and a NASCAR spec radiator and oil cooling assembly.
The transmission utilized is the incredibly strong Race Tech Services 6XD sequential with an Xineering Electronics programmable gearbox control unit. The GCU system allows for clutchless WOT (no-lift) upshifting with ignition cut, and clutchless downshifting with automatic engine rev-matching. This transmission is rated at 1,800 ft. pounds of torque by the manufacturer and allows for over 250 different ratio combinations with at track gear swap capability.
The Hendrick Motorsports designed and built 9 differential houses a G-Force locker unit and Cup spec seals, bearings, races, hubs and axles. It also has an external gear oil cooler and is field capable of at track ratio swaps via the removable carrier.
The immense stopping power of this Track Attack car is provided by AP Racing 6 piston front and 4 piston rear Cup spec calipers. All four brake assemblies are independently cooled via aerodynamically channeled air from side NACA and front fascia ducts. Front and rear brake bias is driver adjustable.
Safety systems include a full roll cage, on board fire suppression system, 6-point racing harness, carbon fiber racing seat with molded insert and leg boards, encapsulated drive shaft containment tube and a Cup spec fuel cell system with safety check valve. Aerodynamic safety features include fully functional roof & hood flaps and anti-lift roof strips and decklid fin.
The rear suspension system is a truck arm/solid rear axle housing design with adjustable wedge and track bar. Front suspension is wedge, bump, toe, caster, camber and ride height adjustable and is a double wishbone design. All four shock absorbers are Cup spec and are rebuildable. Coil springs are utilized on all four suspension corners and can be changed based on driver preference.
Telemetry is provided by a programmable AiM digital dash logger recording Lap Times, Speed, RPM"s, Gear Selection, Water Temp, Oil & Fuel Pressure, Cornering Force, Brake & Throttle Inputs, Date and Time of Day. The dash is also linked to an interior mounted Smarty Cam (camera) which uses GPS technology and overlays numerous performance parameters on video for future reference. This vehicle is also equipped with a reverse camera.
