Vehicle Details Here's something you've never seen before! A little bit of history behind the late-model Pontiac GTO. . In 2004 Pontiac brought back the GTO name (otherwise known as the GOAT) after 30 years of "extinction." While the original GOAT was a red-blooded American, its late model brethren was manufactured by General Motors’ Australian subsidiary, Holden, in "the land down under." This Australian arm of the General would later be responsible for several other GM Performance vehicles. Australia's Holden Monaro would be re-badged and branded as the Pontiac GTO for the US market. Once completed, the new GTOs would get loaded up for a cruise across the ocean by the hundreds! Through this feat of badge engineering, only a limited number of GTOs would make it to American soil. The 2004 model featured a 5.7-liter LS1 powerplant with the option of a 4-speed automatic or a row-your-own T-56 6 speed! For the 2005-2006 model year, the GTO would gain the robust 6.0-liter LS2 for some additional horsepower! From 2004-2006 as well as into its golden years, the GTO would remain one of the most equipped GM performance vehicles both visually as well as mechanically. The GTO’s luxurious interior was so sought after that it became the standard for GM resto-mods! During the Monaro’s development, a convertible was on the horizon. What could be better than a 400+ horsepower, 6-speed manual driving machine that not only had the looks, but the pleasure of the spirited driving with the wind in your hair? Demand for a convertible Monaro/GTO was there. In 2002, Holden developed a concept convertible Monaro, dubbed the “Marilyn.” After bringing this concept to life, Holden realized that the production cost would be prohibitive. Sadly, the “Marilyn” never came to fruition and remained a concept car. Holden laid the “Marilyn” to rest and it has spent its life as the focal point of a museum across the pond. Fast forward almost a decade to 2013. I started Mobile Attractions, a company that focused on GM LS powered vehicles. We started as an OEM parts acquisition and distribution center for the Pontiac GTO as well as other LS vehicles. Later, we began designing and manufacturing aftermarket parts for the GTO, Holden Commodore, and Cadillac CTS-V. The Holden Commodore would be GM’s second and third badge engineering trick as the US would be graced with the Pontiac G8 and the Chevrolet SS (Yes, It’s JUST an SS). My love for the GTO, and its history, runs deep. It was this vehicle that would teach me the way of American enterprise. As I was nearing my swan song, I knew I wanted put Mobile Attractions on the radar to the Holden/GM enthusiasts near and far. My final, tumultuous feat would be a project/shop car like no other. In a world of dyno sheets and time slips, I wanted to do something no one expected; something GM said was not feasible. I was going to bring “Marilyn” to life. This time in my own image. This version began life as a rebuilt title, 2005 Torrid Red coupe. Rebuilt title GTOs are commonplace in the market as parts simply are unavailable, leaving insurance companies no choice but to write them off. Mobile Attractions allowed many GTO owners to keep their beloved vehicles from being put out to pasture. Thankfully, like many other GTOs, the damage on this vehicle was minimal and the rebuilt title is just a technicality. She was the perfect candidate for my vision! In November 2015, the transformation from “Big Red” to the magnificent “Marilyn” began. Wear and tear items like bushings were replaced. The frame was prepared structurally and reinforced with BMR subframe connectors. The body lines were marked, and the process began. The roof was removed, and the necessary modifications were made to clean up the cuts. After this, the remaining body work was completed, and she was ready for paint. During this time, custom interior panels were made to finalize the look and finish. On April 29, 2016, “Marilyn” would make her debut at the 2016 Holden Extravaganza in Orlando, Florida. Being the largest annual gatherings of Holden vehicles, Holden owners from all over the United States and even Canada made the trek down to sunny Orlando for a weekend of camaraderie, car shows, and drag racing! The Marilyn won an award at the Extravaganza for. It was the Extravaganza that led to a series of unfortunate events. The vehicle dropped a lifter and would sit untouched for almost 3 years. Come 2019, I knew it was time to shock the system and bring “Marilyn” back once again. At this time, the vehicle went under the knife yet again, but she was coming back stronger than ever before. She would sit lower, stop quicker, breath better, thump harder, shift easier, accelerate quicker, scream louder, exhale deeper, and shine brighter! What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and “Marilyn” is no exception. Since her rehabilitation, I have had the pleasure of driving her twice in two years for a total of 75 miles. I have moved on to other business opportunities and new start-ups, as well as growing my family. With baby number two on the way, it is time for “Marilyn” to live her life the way she was meant to! She does not deserve to be taking up space and collecting dust on her cover.
