Vehicle description
2005 Audi S4 Cabriolet 6-spd manual – LOW MILES – Fresh July pa inspection VERY GOOD CONDITION, only 82,560 miles. My wife’s daily driver for the last eight years. WHY BUY THIS MODEL…. One of the last (only?) of the V8 powered, AWD, manual shift convertibles that also have a usable back seat; very likely a future collectible. First year of this semi-exotic performance car; Audi discontinued the V8 versions after 2008. The DOHC 4.2l V8 has five valves per cylinder and breathes like nothing else. Its 340 horsepower flow from the engine like an electric motor. Car pulls very strong and will put a smile on your face. Legendary Audi full-time QUATTRO AWD system pulls you through any weather. These cars with the V8 are getting increasingly rare, especially in this condition, with a 6-spd manual, and with these low miles.
WHY THIS PARTICULAR CAR. . . . Since it’s been with us (2012) it’s always been garaged, owned and loved by ‘those kind of people’; the kind who spend over $16k over their eight years of ownership meticulously maintaining it, even pre-emptively spending gobs of money to attend to known problems this specific model may develop, like the fatal design flaw this engine is infamous for. If you’ve done your research you know that the timing belt was moved to the back of the engine when Audi decided to stuff it into their smaller A4 chassis in order to outdo BMW’s M3. They rightfully converted it to a chain instead of a belt to "last the life of the car", but then installed the belted car’s cheap plastic tensioner guide and faulty hydraulic tensioner. These have been known to fail as early as 55k miles and when they do, the timing chain skips and the interference valves crash into the pistons and the engine is basically turned to junk, and replacements/rebuilds are $12k+. Think I’m kidding?; check out this website if you aren’t already aware:
https:/ excelerateperformance.com/news/b6b7-s4-timing-chain-service-the-hard-truth . I would not advise anyone to buy this model car if the upgraded parts haven"t been installed in it. You might get lucky, or you might buy a ticking time bomb.
Since my wife adored this car, I decided to have my shop (a full service shop with a machine-shop and that also employs a master Audi mechanic) pull the engine and replace the faulty components with the new kit that Audi had quietly developed and released to dealers years later after customer complaints accumulated (but without ever accepting blame). This is a labor intensive and very expensive job that requires removing the engine, so we also had the clutch replaced at the same time. All of this was done pre-emptively in 2017, about 13k miles ago, at a total cost of $6,000. I have the pictures and receipts. Two years before that we also had a new top installed after the back window fell out because its adhesive had failed; another known problem Audi wouldn’t admit to. The new top has the window sewed in and is a‘better-than Audi’ part; $2,200. Like I said; we"ve plowed a lot of money into it!
The car is fifteen years old and so is not a perfect show car; after fifteen years it has some expected road rash, scratches and a couple of dings. But it still cleans up impressively, as you can see in the pictures. I had some curb rash issues taken care of because these wheels are nearly impossible to find! My intention was to have all the other little cosmetic imperfections corrected in a couple more years when my wife retires but she decided to join the herd and get a new compact SUV this month and the two of us don’t need four cars! The car is a super-enjoyable driver’s car that could easily be brought to show condition with attention paid to the usual collection of aesthetic imperfections that accumulate over time and miles of driving. Although some interior carbon-fiber trim parts have fallen off (another adhesive problem) the interior has otherwise held up extremely well and Audi is due credit for that; it looks a couple of years old at worst! The car just passed PA’s stringent annual inspection in July and needed only its tires rotated and aligned, so she’s ready to go. Frankly, we still love this car. It’s a true all-weather fun-mobile that has had a lot of money spent on it and so we"re not letting it go for what KBB thinks these rare cars are worth. If no one agrees with our valuation of the car I will simply sell my Lexus and drive the S4 instead because I also love it and believe these models will start rising in value in a few more years, especially a low-miles example like this one. While turbo-charged this, and hybridized that, are everywhere these days a true, throbbing V8 is an increasing rarity, and especially combining AWD with manual shift, and in a 4-seater convertible to boot! In fact, other than early Jeep Wranglers (which is a completely different beast), the Audi S4 cabriolet may have been the only such combination ever offered in this country!
No tire kickers please and you MUST be experienced driving a stick-shift to test drive it! I will accompany everyone on the test drive and there will be no horsing around. The car has always been driven respectfully and that’s not going to change, at least not while we still own it. Happy bidding! P.S., the car is also listed locally and so I could end the auction early if it sells.
