The story of Daisy, the 2002 VW Beetle: Maxine, my mother-in-law, born and raised in a farm in Iowa,never complains about anything and rarely expresses materialistic desires.Chalk it off to her German ancestry and a strict upbringing when daily life inthe depression era was extremely hard work and every penny counted. Racking our brains for a Christmas present for Maxinetowards the end of 2002, we finally cracked the code: relatives confided thatMaxine had for years harbored a secret love for the bright yellow Beetle one ofher friends owned. And so, early Christmas morning, December 25, 2002, as the kidswere opening their presents around the tree in my in-laws’ living room, my wifeled her Mom towards the front of the house. A bright yellow and brand-new VW bug, wrapped with outsizedred bow and ribbons, was sitting in the middle of the front lawn, and staringat Maxine… Love at first sight! Forward 18 years, Maxine has turned 91 and decided to give up driving. She would like Daisy, her beloved yellowbug, to find a second owner who will take care of her as well as she did. Daisy has never spent a single night outdoors. For 18 years, shehas shared a two-car garage with many different roommates; my father-in-law enjoysgetting a new car every 2-3 years. . Yet, Daisy still outshines them all. At the end of 2020, Daisy reached a milestone: she finally brokethe 20,000 miles mark on her odometer! To celebrate this momentous occasion, wegifted her a new battery and 4 new tires. Daisy is pristine, unique, and looking forward to thecontinued TLC she has enjoyed at the hands of Maxine all these years.
