Having owned 3 of these W140 sedans over the past 10 years and have shopped countless others,I can say with confidence that a 3-line description for a car of this nature isthe kiss of death to a would-be purchaser. This description will be longer than that and I will do my best to describe the condition of the vehicle honestly, good or bad. This particular vehicle, a 1999, is the last year built of a 9-year run. If you know this model, over $1 billion was spent on R&D and that’s in 1980’s dollars. In a nutshell, the 1999 model, no surprise, was considered the best of the bunch due to the sorting out and correcting of some earlier issues. I purchased this 1999 S420 sedan in mid-2018 with just shy of 105,000 miles on the odometer. At the time, the Carfax stated two prior owners although the person I purchased it from stated that the first owner was a family member and it had been owned by the same family since new. I spoke to several of the local specialty shops that had serviced the vehicle over the course of its life andwas satisfied with the work that had been done. It seemed that, based upon the Carfax records, that the car had not been driven as much the past few years before I purchased it. The gentleman I purchased it from said it was his mother’s car and she was advancing in age and didn’t drive much in the past few years. I should also mention that the only reason I’m getting rid of it is that I’ve recently acquired a vehicle that works a bit better for my work commute. I typically purchase one, maintain it for 2-3 years, sell it and buy another. As with any used Mercedes, and those with experience know, there’s no such thing as Mercedes of this age where “everything works”. With this particular car, I will list the items at the bottom of the listing that need replacement or do not work as they should. Most are very minor but, again, transparency is the game here. Exterior The exterior of the vehicle is in fantastic condition. The paint is in great condition and looks great close up. There are very few marks but a couple of very small rock chips have been touched up. The Carfax shows minor damage to the right front door a few years back but can’t really see any evidence of damage and any painting was matched well. The previous owner had said this was the result of another car backing into the door at very low speed in a parking lot. I get constant compliments on this car. It is truly beautiful. I’ve always preferred this body style to the ones before and after. It is very self-serviceable and run less by computers than the W220. Interior The interior of this vehicle is also in tremendously good condition. I’m not sure if the back seat had ever been sat in before I purchased it. It was,and continues to be, pristine. I replaced the factory stereo with a high-quality Pioneer unit with CD, USB input as well as Bluetooth which runs through the original Bose speakers. Also replaced were all bulbs for the instrument cluster. All carpets are great but there is some degradation of foam on the bottom of a couple of the mats. The window have a 35% tint with a lifetime warranty that I had installed about 3 months after purchase. They are the darkest legal tint in the state of Georgia and look fantastic with the white paint. Mechanics Please see thephoto showing the maintenance list and what I have done / what I have had done. I do quite a few things myself and always have. I leave oil changes, tire work and alignments to others. These cars are notoriously known for overall reliability and I’ve never had a W140 leave me stranded. I cannot say the same for the W220 that I’ve owned. Overall, this is the lowest mileage Mercedes I’ve purchased and I really hate to part with it, as it has many years of service left. My other two models were S500’s but I really like the S420. The primary differences being 275hp vs. 302hp and the hydraulic self-leveling suspension on the rear of the S500. Personally, other than some low-end torque, the S420 has plenty of power. Also, my first S500 required about $600 to repair the hydraulic system. S420 has 4 std shocks, about $100 each. Hydraulic shocks run about $1,100 each for the S500. An added benefit to the S420 is mileage. I have taken this car on 3 trips in the past year of over 1,000 round trip each and have averaged over 24mpg. I’m pretty happy with that. What is not perfect As with all older Mercedes, there are going to be some things that don’t always work 100%. With this vehicle, they are mostly minor, however I will list them. Pneumatic locks– front two doors need new locking pump. The main pump works fine for the door closers, trunk closer and such but the drivers side door needs to be opened via key currently and the front passenger door needs to be manually unlocked. It locks just fine with the key fob Intermittent Wipers – continuous wipers work fine on both speeds but intermittent module needs to be replaced (found underneath cover in front of rearview mirror) Retractable Mirror – passenger side retraction does not work but driver’s side does. This part may have been replaced when the door was damaged. Don’t know but rarely use this feature so it never bothered me. The electrically adjustable mirror works fine, only the retraction onthe passenger side is an issue. Rear Tires – I replaced these about 15,000 miles ago but they’re close to the wear bars at this time. I just replaced the front tires last week. Slight Vibration – at 40-60mph, there is sometimes a slight vibration felt through the steering wheel. I did find one of the tire rotation receipts saying that one of the rims had a slight dent in the inside of it. I’ve never had it repaired but it only really happens on rougher roads so haven’t addressed it. I know this is long, blah blah blah. I just love these cars and want to present the car as it is. I have driven this car daily for 1.5 years. I don’t buy these cars for them to sit. Matter of fact, if that’s why you want it, I would advise against it. These cars get pissed if you don’t drive them and will make you pay. Trust me. Normal buyer stuff. Please keep your word if you want to buy this car. Also, I"m aware of the car"s value so please keep that in mind when offering. $500 deposit via paypal works for me. I will try to respond as quickly as possible with questions. Buyer is responsible for arranging payment and pickup.
