Vehicle description
I traded locally with another owner for this Miata / MX-5 back in the spring and it honestly is one of the funnest cars I have ever driven! It is a perfect car for the spring / summer and fall, and the automatic transmission makes it something you can just relax and enjoy the drive instead of worrying about gears in any stop and go traffic you encounter.
I have put about 3000 miles on the cars since I got it and just did the MAJOR service, so brand new water pump, timing belt, thermostat, etc. and all new seals, and most importantly a brand new crankshaft key was installed along with the new boss pulley and timing gear, OEM parts bought at Mazda Greensboro.
If you do any research on these cars, especially the first generation 1.6L NA, they are notorious for the crank key wallowing out and thus slowly but surely getting loose and effecting the timing. If you are going to buy a Miata, ask them if this service was already done and if those parts were all included this repair!? As you can imagine this is not a cheap service, about 10-15 hours of labor, we also pulled the top off and resealed all of that at the same time so it should be good to go for another 100k!
The other major service here was the front catalytic converter was completely clogged up. This is a CA / NY emissions approved car with 2 cats and a brand new cat was ordered from RockAuto and installed so it is breathing much easier now.
Other new parts recently installed in the last 6 months by the previous owner:
TEIN Street Basis Z Coilovers
15x8 xxr527 wheels with 195/50/15 Hankook tires.
Radiator along with all hoses
EGR valve and complete fuel system clean
Driveshaft (after lowering the car)
Soft top with rear GLASS & weather stripping
Rear brake caliper
Car runs fantastic, I am getting 27 mpg back and forth to work, A/C blows cold, power windows go up and down, seats are in good shape / got covers on them. NARDI steering wheel ready to be installed. Stereo is a Jensen unit that is hard to see but connects to my bluetooth and plays just fine with that and CD, not getting good signal for FM/AM. Paint is 17+ years old, clear coat has faded in places and some of those spots already were repaire and looks very sharp overall.
I am selling because I am looking forward to my commute over the winter and even though it does not snow often, this RWD / lowered sports cars is probably not the best solution for me.
After listing the car I found out the history on it from California and Florida, and revised the listing to show those on the title status. Oddly enough it is a "clean" title in NC and the accident in FL was about 50,000 miles ago so it is obviously running just fine since then. The CA incident appears to be when it was first titled, makes me wonder if there was an issue in shipping into the USA that caused that? But the car runs just fine and I never worried about the title myself when I bought it.
