Vehicle description
1998 JAGUAR XK8 CONVERTIBLE LOW MILEAGE, METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED "Last of the great Jaguar GT cars"
I have owned many Jags. Starting with a 1969 XKE 2+2. I"ve owned a 120 Fixed Head Coupe, a 1973 E-Type Roadster, an XJ6 C and several more. Needless to say, I love the cars and have a good bit of experience with them. My feedback and reputation on is impeccable and I pride myself on doing the best I can to over-describe the vehicle. So here"s my opinion about this beautiful convertible which I have owned since 2015 and purchased her with approximately only 26,000 miles.
The reason I say that the XK8 is the last great Jaguar Touring Model is because although the F-Type is a perfectly wonderful automobile, it does not provide the driving experience for which Jaguar cars are legendary. And for this reason you will see the XK8 vehicles appreciate. The Jaguar driving experience is hard to describe if you have never driven or owned a Jag, however the ride characteristics and suspension damping is uniquely British and absent in the F-Type. Jaguar has shared this characteristic with other notable makes from England such as Rolls Royce, Bentley, Rover and even the wonderful TR6. I have owned all of those in the past. So about my car. .
When I purchased it there was an accident noted on the Carfax. The only trace of a repair to the body was a softball size spot on the right rear corner of the car just under the taillight where the paint was very slightly a different texture, showing a bit more orange peel. I had the car fully inspected and I have been under this vehicle many times and no one has ever found any structural damage to the vehicle. So I purchased her with nice low mileage and some ugly wheels and tires. I automatically go through every car I buy regardless of the documentation, replacing important fluids, adjustments, etc. Ironically years after purchasing this Jag it would again receive light damage when it was parked at a store and someone backed into it. Again a small soft ball size dent , this time on the drivers side in the rear - see picture. So it may now show 2 accidents on a Carfax. When that occurred I took the opportunity to repair that damage and go around the car and correct every imperfection I could see such as the orange peel from the old repair. Again, no structural damage and beautifully repaired. The color of this car is one of the prettiest renditions of silver I have ever seen.
The earliest record of service on this car that I possess is from July of 2012 at 15123 miles for an oil change. I have repaired or improved nearly everything on this car and it really needs nothing. As you can see she sits on a hubcentric set of Coventry 18 X 8.5" wheels. The wheels are extremely presentable but are beginning to show their age. The tires are 255 X 40 ZR 18 Toyo Proxes T1 Sport radials with a bit over 3100 miles on them.
In order to ensure the perfect Jaguar ride, a sophisticated 4 wheel alignment was performed. Part of this procedure if done correctly requires that the rear axles be shimmed for perfect rear alignment. I had this car aligned twice at a Jag dealer who said they did a 4 wheel alignment and they did not do this procedure. This involves a shim kit and disassembly of much of the rear member. It"s been done and will not need to be done again. At that time I also replaced the cams on the front suspension and the car tracks like a new one. These cars do not do well with very aggressive unidirectional tires. The suspension is not calibrated for that type of tire. So I was very careful to buy a tire which performed well and rode well. These are expensive tires and all tolled, the careful setup of the suspension cost over $1000. and the tires were another $1000. The tire size has the effect of lowering the car 1" from stock while keeping the speedometer within tolerance.
Some work I"ve had done since I own her includes: Mobil One only oil changes Replaced V-Mounts Replaced lower control arms and bushings Rebuilt automatic rear view mirror Replaced rear window regulator Replaced stabilizer bar bushings New Toyo Proxes T1 Sport radials Alignment and shimming of the suspension Bosch wiper blades New front leather upholstery New front brake pads and rotors Rebuilt ABS module Flushed the brake system And more
When looking at older Jaguars due to age you will likely replace most or all of the rubber bushings in order for the car to ride properly. Seemingly cheap Jaguars generally need lots of attention and it"s easy to rack up a $5000 bill pretty quickly. If you can"t get good service records count on spending a good bit. The OEM parts are best and that is much of what you see above. The cruise control can be finicky on my car - working perfectly for a long period and taking a day off now and then. I received a stone chip on the right headlight so I replaced that. I received a very tiny stone chip on the original windshield (see pic) and it broke my heart but I replaced that as well.
A couple of minor flaws include: The cup holder pops out of place occasionally but will hold your drink. When replacing the leather on the front seats, the tech broke 1 or 2 plastic covers at the hinges. Not really easy to see. There are a few minor stone chips in the clear coat on the front bumper which are not noticeable. The base coat is intact.
All in all - she"s beautiful. If it doesn"t sell this week it will be off the market for good. I"d rather sell it than store it.
I drive this car so the mileage will vary slightly since this posting. Feel free to call or email with any other questions and thanks for looking. Joe @ 831-200-1414.
