Vehicle description
Onofrio Pollock Racing is a team of studentsand alumni of Michigan Technological University who created a BMW Art CarTribute for the 2020 Grassroots Motorsports $2,000 Challenge. The teamconsisted of Abby Hempy, the team chief and newly graduated master’s student ofmechanical engineering, and Tucker Alsup, the driver and alumnus of MichiganTech in electrical engineering. They worked hard to repair and rebuild theengine, modify the interior, re-route the exhaust, install an electric fan, maintainthe budget, secure sponsors, and replace the brakes, clutch, and many otherparts, and, of course, install the artwork. The 2020 Grassroots Motorsports $2,000 Challenge is acompetition to create a competitive race car on a budget. Remaining under$2,000, the vehicle can be built, re-designed, and modified in numerous ways. Thisyear’s challenge took place in Gainesville, Florida October 23-24 where the carendured an autocross and drag race. There was also a judging portion to discussalterations, budget, and appearance. A total of 4,700 miles was added to thevehicle from the round trip from Houghton, MI to Florida. Stops were made at EarnhardtChildress Racing Engines and NASCAR R&D. Because of the unique nature of the project, where the car originated, and the inspiring artwork, this car was featured inmany online blogs and magazines including SAE International, ChicagoNow, MattStone Blog, Race Day News, as well as the “My Ride” column, written by A.J.Baime in the Wall Street Journal. The corporate sponsors for this ambitious team were BFGoodrich Tires, ShiftUp Now, Jamison Search International, Austen Madison Racing, and YachtFreaks. Starting bid is $1.0 and 50% of the proceeds will go toward the Superior Schoolof Dance in Hancock, MI. These funds will gotoward scholarships given to graduating dancers to provide them support inpursuing education. Abby hopes to inspire young students interested in art tosee the creative side of engineering. Onofrio Pollock Racing is solely an extracurricularactivity and is not a Michigan Tech sponsored student group. Buyer is responsible for pick-up and payment of storage unit after January 30th. TECHNICAL DETAILS: Runs and drives. This is not a highly modified car, under the hood it"s essentially stock, but it would take some work to make this a more comfortable passenger car again. Engine: Has had top end removed twice: - New timing chain, timing chain guides, thermostat housing, thermostat. - New rod end bearings. Crank bearings were stock and left as is. New rod end bolts and crank bolts. - New oil pan gasket. Recent oil change. - Tires are pretty woofed out. Still drivable, but may be dicey for more than a few hundred miles. 17" rims. - New brakes and rotors and wheel speed sensor - New clutch - removed dual mass flywheel for solid flywheel (OEM replacement) - Removed stock muffler, straight pipe after the catalytic converter, still relatively quiet. - New exhaust gasket, new intake gasket. - Rebuild VANOS unit. Solenoid is stock. - Stock camshafts, pistons, rings, hydraulic tensioners. -Still a "ticking" sound on start-up. This is NOT knock. All bearing tolerances are in spec. 80% believed to be timing chain slapping chain guides. - Backseat needs to be re-bolted down. Missing two rear seat belts and carpeting. - Trunk upholstery removed, still has spare tire. - Both front passenger and front driver door handles (inside) broke off. Saved both, but need to use rope to open doors currently. - Electric fan installed, removed crank pulley fan. Switch is located in driver cockpit - External blacklight strip runs off battery, switch is located in passenger cockpit - Fire extinguisher installed on passenger seat - Driver"s seat adjustment works intermittently. Pins on connect are bent and make it difficult to keep the connector in. - Radio works intermittently. Comes with some spare parts and gaskets.
