Vehicle description

The Overview If you’re reading this, you probably already know that 1997 was one of the best years of the R129 chassis. It has the venerable M119 DOHC 32 valve engine. Used in Mercedes’s famous skunkworks Group C race cars, as well as the 500E that everyone knows and loves. It boggles my mind that a four door midsize sedan with the same engine brings 2-3x more money than this iconic roadster, but such is the world we live in. Combined with a FACTORY PANORAMIC ROOF, and you have, perhaps, the holy grail of the SL 500 lineup. So, today is the day for offering an aspiring R129 owner or collector this nice classic 1997 Mercedes-Benz SL500 Roadster. It is finished in the uncommon Midnight Blue (904), which is almost like a dark blue when you Google Image it, but pops really nicely in the sun, with beige leather hides and matching dark blue soft top. Whoever ordered this car when new knew what they were doing. Carfax shows a whopping 55 service records during the life of the car with no accidents or damage reported as of the August 14th, 2021 Carfax date. Driven just 67,964 miles since new. Sold with clean and clear NY title. Exterior The exterior of this SL500 is in overall very good condition. The car recently received a minor detailing and has a great shine. I’ve kept it under a high quality car cover since then so it’s still sitting pretty. Very clean and straight body and I invite you to come inspect it yourself before auction closes. Of course it has the panoramic hardtop, so you have instant bragging rights over pretty much any other R129, unless we are talking SL73s. Last I checked a brand new pano roof from Mercedes Classic Center is like $23K, so having one instantly adds value to your car. All engine compartment and door sill stickers appear to be in place as well, and door locks work as intended. Undercarriage looks solid upon my and mechanic’s inspections. No corrosion on body. The Midnight Blue paint shows really well with a few minor nicks, swirls, and other light cosmetic blemishes as to be expected on a car of this vintage. All glass in good shape, working power windows, etc. Lights, high beams work as they should. Some wear on the insulation pad under the hood, pretty common. One headlight bezel trim piece got split while we were taking photos, but I have replacement ones and will try to have them installed prior to delivery. Has power soft top and roll bar. Both work great at the push of a button. There is a video of soft top operation in the Drive album linked below. Overall this is one stunning and well-preserved 30-year old Mercedes in a not often seen color. Please be sure to have a look at the Google drive photo album where every square inch of the body should be depicted. Interior I think the photos will reflect the lovely interior, but the interior is in very good shape overall. Real leather throughout the interior Original books, spare tire, tonneau cover, and maintenance booklet are present. Car antenna and radio work as they should. A/C and heat both work well. I have spare set of sun visors/vanity mirrors for the car, as someone removed the mirrors from the originals. I guess they didn’t like seeing their reflection! Seats and leather have held up remarkably well for the age of the car. Minor wear on driver side bolster. Speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge, tach, oil pressure gauge, etc. all function as they should. Soft top and hardtop are in really good shape. Power soft top and roll bar are functional as well. Panoramic roof is an experience worth writing home about. It honestly feels like you are driving top down but without the sun burning down on you. Driving at night is the coolest thing. Seeing the moon beam down on you in full view. You know when you were a kid and your parents would tell you to look out the window to see a mountain or stars in the sky, but it would always be tough from the back seat? No such problem here. Just look straight up! The seats, parcel shelf, and carpets are very clean as the photos show. Wood trim also appears to be in good shape. Cupholders, covers, etc. all work. Overall, this is a very comfortable and well laid-out, well preserved cockpit that is very comfortable over long or short trips. Still has that great rich leather smell that MBs used to have! The Drive Mechanically, this Benz is very solid. It starts up easily and runs great and makes a lot of power and torque. Great passing power and smooth shifts from the gearbox. These are stout powertrains and are quite under-stressed. Consistent brake pedal feel, braking ability, and good suspension/supple ride quality. Only minor issue I can think of is sometimes there is an exhaust rattle/clunk from the resonator, I have been assured this has no effect on performance or drivability whatsoever. No dash lights or anything, just some small occasional noise. The car has a substantial feel to it. It tracks straight on the highway. Great long distance cruiser. And Surprisingly good gas mileage on the highway! I welcome any Pre purchase inspections as long as your mechanic wears a mask. Overall, this car is a very strong runner that can keep pace with modern day traffic and a great cruiser that gets a lot of thumbs-ups. I would certainly drive this to California tomorrow, and I don’t say that about a lot of cars! Please let me know if you have any questions. Terms and Conditions 1.
