Need a new go-anywhere companion just beginning its second life? We have the perfect one in this 1997 Land Rover Discovery 4x4. Nineteen ninety-seven was the next-to-last model year for the first-generation Discovery. We are proud to over this Disco 1 in such great overall condition and showing less than 100k miles! This have become so hard to find in recent years and the original Discovery will forever be a classic!
Made in Solihull, England, this example is finished in very desirable Rioja Red Metallic (code 601) and the paint and trim are in overall excellent condition. The bodywork is straight and solid, the cargo area behind the second row looks great and comes with a cargo cover, the engine bay is extremely tidy and the black bumper fit tightly to the SUV’s body.
This Land Rover rolls on Hankook DynaPro ATM tires, size 235/70R16 at every corner and has a Michelin 4x4 rear-mounted spare tire, also size 235/70R16.
Under the hood is a 4.0L aluminum V-8 engine with sequential multi-port fuel injection. Backing up this motor is a four-speed automatic transmission (code ZF 4HP22) and a 3.54:1 rear end. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning and dual-zone climate control, power steering, cruise control, power four-wheel disc brakes, power windows, power locks, Alpine windows and tilt steering column.
Safety equipment includes dual front airbags and anti-lock brakes.
The Bahama Beige leather interior is in overall very good condition. The front bucket and rear bench seats look great, as does the matching carpet and headliner. California walnut wood interior trim bedecks the instrument panel, which is in very good shape and the gauges are framed by a four-spoke steering wheel. The center console and console-mounted shift lever look great. A factory AM/FM stereo with cassette deck completes the interior.
The 1994 model year marked the first year that the Land Rover Discovery was sold in the United States. Airbags were incorporated into the design of the 1994 model to meet the requirements of US motor vehicle safety regulations, though they were not fitted as standard in all markets. All North American specification (NAS) models were fitted with the 3.9-litre V8 from the Range Rover SE models, and later models saw a change to the 4.0-litre version of the engine.
Technically speaking, the 1996-98 US models with 4.0-litre engines had the same displacement as the 3.9-litre engines fitted to the earlier 1994-95 US models; the differences between the engines involved improvements to the block rigidity and pistons, and a change from the Lucas 14CUX engine management to the distributor-less Generic Engine Management System (“GEMS.” In earlier 3.9-liter US engines, the fuel injection computer (14CUX) did not control the ignition, which was instead controlled by a traditional system with an ignition coil and distributor made by Lucas. The GEMS system was developed jointly by Lucas and SAGEM; it controlled both spark timing and fuel injection. Unlike the earlier systems fitted to Rover V-8 engines, GEMS was made OBD-II compliant. This change was largely driven by the federal requirement (starting in 1996) for vehicles sold in the United States to meet the OBD-II specification.
Competition to this Land Rover in 1997 included Acura’s SLX, Chevrolet’s S-10 Blazer, Ford’s Explorer, GMC’s S-15 Jimmy, Infiniti’s QX4, Jeep’s Grand Cherokee, Mercury’s then-new Mountaineer, Mitsubishi’s Montero, Nissan’s Pathfinder and Toyota’s 4Runner.
If you’re looking to get on with a 4x4 that will become a definitive classic in 2022, you should check out this Land Rover. It is barely broken in and remains in great shape. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to see it for yourself.
