Built on the Type Four platform shared by the Fiat Croma, the Lancia Thema and the Saab 9000, the 164 was the last model developed by Alfa Romeo before its takeover by Fiat. Intended to compete with the premium German sedans, the 164 was the most upscale of the modern Alfas, stickering for a heady $38,940 in 1995, the last year it was sold here. The 164Q was only produced for the 1994-1995 model years in very small numbers. The Pininfarina designed 164 was the last car developed by an independent Alfa Romeo, and the range-topping Quadrifoglio models were fitted with an extended rear apron, side-skirts, and deeper front spoiler from the factory. The Quadrifoglio version featured a four-cam, 24-valve version of the 3.0-liter V-6, rated at 230 horsepower. The 164 Q features an electronically-controlled dampening suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. The 3.0 liter 24-valve motor sent 230hp to the front wheels when new. There have been no modifications to the engine or drivetrain, and the 5-speed transmission shifts smoothly.
