Vehicle description

This 290GD is a rare beast in these parts. It started life as a working truck in the Polish forestry service and was shipped overseas as a gray market import. This version is the W461, the bare bones version of the more luxurious W463. While other W461 G wagens can be found in the states, this engine is pretty unusual. It is powered by the naturally aspirated diesel 5 cylinder om602, the updated version of the venerable om617 found in many of the 80’s Mercedes sedans which routinely clock 15 billion miles without a rebuild. While those engines require routine valve adjustments, the valves on this engine are self-adjusting. While unusual, I have never had any trouble finding parts.
Odometer is in kilometers, currently at 73,500 km.
A little about me: I’ve had other classic Mercedes including a 380sl and a diesel 300sd. All work is done by me. I’m a bit of a perfectionist. When I downshift I always double clutch. “That’s what synchros are for” you might say. You’re missing the point, man. Point is you’re getting a truck that has been babied while I’ve had it. It’s so easy to take shortcuts when working on cars, just know none were taken.
Things I have done:
Diesel purge. Crystal clear from beginning to end.
New rear brake cylinders
New rear brake drums
New left rear brake shoe adjuster
New shifter bushings
New coolant hoses
New alternator, new wiring
New fuel sender
All new fluids except brake and clutch. Brake system partially flushed during cylinder replacement.
New diff reservoir hose and cap
Newish tires, refurbished wheels
New reverse light switch
New idle adjustment cable
New dash bulbs
Passed VA inspection in March.
Left to do:
Radio. I have two Benz units, not sure if either works, highly doubt, not connected. Speakers there but never tested. Passenger door lock: Functioning with key, but not centrally from the driver"s side.
Engine starts immediately. All gauges work. Butter smooth transfer case. Diff locks and bulbs functioning. On hot restarts during the summer, I was getting a glow plug light after engine started indicating at least one plug on its way out, but that has since resolved on its own. I have 5 new in box ready for install. Scattered surface rust underneath, minimal on body. Ask for pics. I"m happy to answer any questions you might have.
