Vehicle description
This is a 1990 Vanagon Westfalia Weekender. If you are a fan of Volkswagen campers, then I"m sure you are familiar with the Westfalia name. They have been making campers out of VW Buses and Vans since the late 1950s. Westfalia made 2 versions of the Vanagon poptop camper. The full camper and the Weekender Multivan. The full camper only had seating for 2 adults in the rear plus the 2 front seats. The Weekender was made with a full width rear seat for 3 adults plus 2 removable rear facing seats plus the 2 front seats. Seating for 7.
We bought this camper earlier this year and had it shipped to our house in St Augustine, Florida. We also bought a 1955 waterfront cottage for our family to live in around the same time. We are STILL renovating our cottage and have decided to let this Vanagon go to someone who can enjoy her right now! I have no doubt that we will be camping in a VW Westfalia down the road, just not right at this moment.
This Vanagon came from the family of an enthusiast who cared for her and we have a good bit of the records and receipts for work done. The Vanagon looks really nice and runs great. It is a slightly modified version of the Westfalia Weekender. Behind the drivers front seat, a cabinet was built. This cabinet is about the same size as a standard camper cabinet. It has a 2 way fridge (plug in and battery powered) The fridge works great and really freezes ice cold. The is a storage compartment to the right and on top is a built in shelf for a propane camp stove. There is also an extra battery compartment connected to a solar panel on the front of the roof. This Vanagon has a standard battery plus 2 extra battery to run the fridge, laptop, etc. We haven"t tested the solar panel charging system and there are some wires that may need to be connected but we can only assume it works as well as the other custom parts such as the fridge. According to receipts, this custom cabinet, solar panel, fridge, etc is about 6 years old.
Like we said, this Vanagon runs very well. A couple of quirks. The AC belt is currently not on the compressor and was that way when we got it. The AC compressor turns and there is a sticker in the engine compartment indicating it was converted to newer freon about 6 years ago. The AC components are all there but untested. Also, the power mirrors are not currently working. According to our records, a new engine was installed around 5 years ago. There are very few miles on this new engine. It was from a well known VW parts and supply company called The Bus Depot and it was installed at a private shop. Other minor parts such as coolant lines, etc were installed at the same time. The clutch and transmission shift smoothly and the brakes stop the Vanagon straight and true. If this is the first Vanagon that you are considering buying, please read up on these cool vehicles and all of their pluses and their quirks. There is a huge community of like minded people who are willing to help VW Bus and Vanagon owners learn about their vehicles and help if anything goes wrong. . and even camp in their front yard or farm while you pass thru!
This Vanagon was painted around 6 years ago according to receipts. It looks great! If you look very very closely, you can see a few places where the paint shows very small bubbles or has pulled away a bit. A close look underneath the Bus shows NO signs of rust damage. The Michelin tires look very good with no cracking. The poptop tent has a few repaired tears. It is fine for camping right now but I would budget in the future for a nice hemp 3 window tent if we were to keep this camper. These tents are not expensive and can be installed by anyone relatively handy (or if you can follow youtube direction!)
Overall, this is a great camper to buy, make it your own, and go hit the road! Please let us know if you have any questions. We are enthusiasts and have sold a number of vehicles on ebay over the years. We may consider a buy it now. We also have a driving video and additional pictures that we can send if you message us. Thank you.
