This 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer showcases the uniquely rugged look of Jeep’s traditional past and AMC’s sturdy V-8. These full-sized, body-on-frame trucks paved the way for modern SUVs, but continue to be desirable among enthusiasts who seek classically American looks and heritage. An uncanny nod to Jeep’s heritage is shown with the angular body lines that start at the crowned polished aluminum grille (adorned with a prominent Jeep hood ornament) that flow from the clamshell hood into the upright greenhouse. Based on the full-framed chassis of its Kaiser/AMC/Chrysler/Jeep forefathers since 1963, this SJ Jeep retains its original leaf spring suspension design and Dana 44 axles fore and aft. Bolstering the effortless steering provided by the recirculating-ball steering system, the use of the power-assisted front discs and rear drums provides stopping power. The vehicle stops, steers and rides well, with the previous replacement of shock absorbers, including adjustable rears. We purchased this in 2012, adding 28k of the 156k miles now shown. It is finished in Bright White with faux wood paneling over Cordovan leather and cloth. Equipment includes a roof rack with new mounting hardware and seals, a trailer hitch receiver, machine-faced 15” aluminum wheels in good condition with some oxidation in the finish, coupled with Hankook Optimo H724 white walls , air conditioning, and power-adjustable front seats. Recent service included a Virginia State Inspection and an oil change. This Grand Wagoneer is offered with service records, factory literature, and a clean Virginia title.
The 360-cubic-inch overhead-valve V-8 in this Grand Wagoneer was the third and final iteration of AMC’s tall-deck engine and features rugged cast-iron construction for the block and cylinder heads. In 1989, it was rated at 144 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, the power flows to both axles via the original TorqueFlite 727 three-speed automatic transmission and Jeep’s Selec-Trac all-wheel-drive system. The Cordovan leather interior features individual front bucket seats and a rear bench seat with cordovan leather upholstery, corduroy inserts, and high-pile backing, along with matching carpets. A two-spoke steering wheel with an aftermarket cover sits ahead of factory instrumentation including a 100-mph speedometer along with auxiliary gauges for voltage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The Pioneer radio with Bluetooth and hands-free phone is fully functioning and includes a wireless remote. The seating surface of the passenger’s front seat has one tear, about 1.5" long. Creases are visible on the leather upholstery and wear is noted on the steering wheel rim. The cargo area retains its original carpeting and stainless-steel trim on the tailgate and floor. It is missing one stainless-steel trim bar. It also includes the retractable factory Cargo Cover. The floor has been lined with sound deadening material from the firewall to the tailgate.The headliner was replaced in 2019 using corrugated plastic rather than fiberboard. Aircraft rated closed cell foam was applied to the underside of the roof at the same time. Power windows, door locks and mirrors all work properly. Woodgrain trim accents the dashboard and door panels, and amenities include power accessories, power-adjustable front seats, air conditioning, and an overhead console featuring map lights and a digital compass and temperature display(compass and temp are non-functioning). There is buckling on the edges of the dash pad, as well as a large crack in the center of the pad. Minor surface rust can be seen on the lower left of the tailgate inside the wood trim, the frame also appears to be free of major corrosion. T he original simulated wood vinyl trim shows slight fading. There is some rust beneath the paint finish at the base of the windshield and paint chips on several areas of the body. Corrosion is noted on the sheet metal below the left-rear window. The windshield has fogging/separation around the perimeter.
