The truck’s body is straight and solid, the engine bay is extremely tidy, the 75-inch cargo bed is clean and looks good with the new bed liner, and the chrome bumpers are in very good order. Passenger sideview mirror, rollbar and KC Hilites added within past three years. Inside, the gray cloth-and-vinyl interior (code HD11) has been reupholstered in correct vinyl. The second family purchased the truck in 2017 and had Dean Laumbach Consulting oversee a cosmetic refresh, including new seat covers and carpeting, the installation of a roll bar and auxiliary lighting, detailing of the engine/undercarriage/paint, paintless dent removal, and more! This truck rolls on Forceum ATZ light truck tires, size 235/75R15 at every corner. Each tire is mounted on factory steel wheels with manual front hubs. The wheels and tires are all in very good shape.
Under the hood is Toyota’s new-for-1988 optional 3L SOHC V-6 engine with electronic fuel injection (code 3VZ-E). As the motor’s dance partner is a five-speed manual transmission with a two-speed transfer case. The most recent service in April 2017 included an oil change, coolant flush, new valve cover seals. Earlier maintenance includes a new clutch slave cylinder installed in August 2016; front brakes and drive belts in May 2010; and head gaskets and exhaust from the catalytic converter rearward in October 2006. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning and tilt steering column.

In North America, the Hilux continued to be sold simply as the “Toyota Pickup.” The cargo capacity was and 1,400 pounds for four-wheel drive models. GVWRs ranged from 2,565 to 5,350 pounds.

Competition to this Hilux in 1988 included four-wheel drive versions of Chevrolet’s S-10, Dodge’s D50 Ram, Ford’s Ranger, GMC’s S-15, Mitsubishi’s Mighty Max and Nissan’s new-for-’88 Hardbody.
