Up for sale is my 1988 Pontiac Fiero Formula in Bright Yellow, a color only available mid-year in 1988. I purchased this car in 2012 from an avid enthusiast who knew his Fiero stuff. The car is almost completely stock, with the numbers matching drivetrain and body panels. The items that are not stock are the radio (which is a later Pontiac AM/FM/Cassette unit with added Aux input - looks appropriate) and the Ocelot exhaust system (which really improves the car’s sound).
The engine and drivetrain are excellent. The car starts instantly when cold, and the 3 speed automatic Turbo-Hydromatic shifts crisply. The brakes are all good, with rebuilt AC Delco calipers and new pads on the front just last year. The brake power boost is functioning as it should. I have driven it with confidence on Interstate 68 in Western Maryland at (and maybe above) the posted 70 m.p.h. speed limit recently, and the car performs beautifully. Of course, the car really shows off its mid-engine handling on secondary roads here in the mountains. The tires are all in good shape, and the proper size and type for this vehicle.
The paint overall is very, very good, but not concourse perfect. From just a few feet away it looks perfect, but detailed inspection will reveal a few flaws. I would call it “Saturday Night Drive-In perfect.” It’s a real head turner at meets like that. If you run a CarFax, you will find that it lists “collision damage” in December of 2004. I have the repair records for that “collision”, and all that the repair required was repainting the rear bumper for $550 by a dealer in New York. They did a very good job. The factory glass sun roof is stowable in the front “trunk”, or you can leave the glass in and block out the sun with it’s original sun shield. Of course, the A/C blows very cold.
The interior is about as good as it can get for 30 years old. The dash top is perfect and is protected by a Dash Designs custom carpet cover that sits nicely in place without any adhesive or fasteners. The steering wheel is also without cracks, but I’ve kept a ribbed cover on it due to the rim having been worn smoother than I like after 30 years. The switches all work, and the headlights popup as they should when you switch on the lights. The seats are both very good, with only one small flaw on the carpeting on the passenger side which you can’t see (hidden by the plush custom floor mats with Fiero logos).
Along with the car, the purchaser will receive the service history that I have (which is considerable), as well as the official 1988 Fiero Service Manual in print form. There are also other manuals (including an original Owner’s Manual) and books that convey with the car. You will also receive a reproduction of the original window sticker prepared by the Pontiac Historical Society. Spare parts included are an original AM/FM Cassette radio and a pair of very good condition spare taillights that I picked up at the AACA meet in Hershey, PA a few years ago.
I hate to let it go, but garage space is at a premium these days, and here in Western Maryland, the number of days that I get to drive it each year are not many. I’ve never had the car out on a rainy day in the past 6 years that I’ve owned it. I have the clear Maryland title in-hand.
