Vehicle description
Outstanding example of a terrific classic. Well-sorted and maintained 1988 BMW 635CSi in a stunning color combination of Cirrus Blue with a Lotus White interior and only 80,000 miles. The engine and transmission are solid and smooth. All electrical items are in working order—windows, mirrors, sunroof, seat controls and all other switches/lights. The paint is mostly original save for a respray of the nose that is evident most likely due to rock chips. The only issue with the car is with the clear coat in that there is crazing on the hood and sunroof (minimal here), and a hazy spot on the right half of the trunk. This actually imparts a nice patina to it. The crazing is only visible at certain brightness and angles of light and is mostly not apparent.
Purchased in February of 2018 to satisfy an admiration (and longing) from my youth of this beautiful vehicle. I have thoroughly enjoyed owning and driving it, and furthermore the satisfaction of having done much work on it myself. In fact, a large amount of the pleasure has derived from having personally done most of the repairs and replacements of parts to restore it to original appearance and working condition. All work done on it is listed below.
Now selling because I would like to buy a new Tesla Model 3 or possibly a Mustang Mach-E (have a reservation on a First Edition, now sold out!). I am trying to roughly break even with the cost of my purchase (10,250) and parts/repairs (~4,300)- no premium for all my time/work, as that was a benefit to me :). Starting bid price is $1,000 below. I did most of the repairs except for the drive shaft and brake master cylinder. A truly magnificent car that is a pleasure to drive. Thanks for looking.
Also included are a battery tender, all-weather custom fit car cover and a set of ORIGINAL TRX metric wheels with Michelin TRX tires. The tires are not road-worthy due to age, but could be used for show purposes.
Extensive service records available, three keys (two main, one with lighted head, and a “headless“ spare); only missing valet but have a blank for it, ALL manuals/books and major portions of original window sticker.
Work to date : 1. Odometer repaired $795—well documented discrepancy via service records of fewer than 200 miles; title is clean and DOES NOT state TMU. 2. New Battery $169 3. New BBS basket weave wheels $475 and BF Goodrich G-FORCE COMP-2 A/S all-season tires $450 (plus $50 shipping) installed 4. Replaced after-market radio/CD-player with period-correct AM/FM cassette BMW anti-theft unit $50 and installed an OEM amplifier $30 which was missing and necessary for the stock radio to work. 5. Replaced broken power antenna X2 (original was jammed, first replacement somehow bent at the end and then the tip came off) $36 6. Replaced burnt-out on-board computer backlight (display was very faint as one of two bulbs was out) $45 7. Engine oil and filter change 8. Coolant flush and refill 9. New power steering fluid and filter 10. Driveshaft replaced- was causing a vibration in the steering felt at low speed when starting out from a stopped position. $899 11. Replaced a burnt-out bulb for the "D" position in the transmission range indicator circuit board in the instrument cluster. Not easy- instrument cluster had to come out (did that myself to save labor costs) and bulb is soldered rather than simply plugging in. $35 for labor/parts on the bulb. 12. Replaced both door handle surrounds (seals) as they were cracked and loose $12. Lots of time spent on that job! 13. Replaced both hood struts $35 14. Replaced both hood latches (hood was not "popping up" when released due to the springs being worn) $80 for the pair (great buy-were on sale at BavAuto-normally about $100 a piece). 15. Replaced both windshield washer nozzles- hopelessly clogged! $54 16. Replaced coolant expansion tank cap as it was very rusted $10 17. Installed a home-made voltmeter in an OEM switch so it looks stock/factory $25 in parts and my labor. 18. Replaced trunk emblem and grommets, as the one it came with was not the proper one- it was a flat hood-style one rather than the correct curved one. $60 19. Had a "paint correction" done- essentially a multi-stage polishing. $250 20. Replaced fuse box cover as tab had broken on original $30 21. Drip rail screw cover replaced X2 on driver’s side (first replacement also fell off). $3.50 3/30/19 22. Replaced both taillight gaskets 3/30/19 $56 23. Replaced hood central insulation piece $60 24. Replaced brake master cylinder as pedal was intermittently "mushy" $566
