Vehicle description
We are listing our lovely soft top 90 in a 7 day no reserve auction.
Please bid whatever you would be willing to pay and good luck. Someone is going to get a great truck just in time for spring.
Here are some questions and answers in no particular order. I hope you find them useful.
# Why are you selling?
Thanks for asking! We are not using this truck and not running tours again till September so can let this go. We also built this truck as an experiment to see what the American market would make of a simple well built Defender 90 beach / desert cruiser. We would like to build and offer more. This is the first.
# You were using on tours?
Yes indeed. We last used it with a lovely couple who flew in from San Diego to Tucson to take a wine tour with us. Our business is called Sonoran Rovers
# Where is it from?
We bought in Pembrokeshire in the UK last summer. It served in the British Army as a radio truck. It retains some really cool features like a nifty little map light and really cool headlight switch. The seats are great too, very simple and comfy.
# It was an army truck? Isn"t it abused?
Not at all. It was meticulously maintained and has low miles. It just turned 100k miles and we put about 3000 of those on it.
What have you done to it?
New timing belt Serviced brakes upgraded springs made some very small repairs to the bulkhead and footwells replaced battery box with new removed the roof and sides painted in primer (we had thought of painting another color but loved the look in primer) put galvanized capings all round installed a very high quality canvas hood and galvanized HD frame installed the best acoustic sound mat system on the market installed 2 brand new bench seats in the back with retractable belts replaced doors with excellent second hand ones with really nice tops (no rattles) new rear swing away tailgate lined the rear tub with durable coating serviced with all new fluids New NAS style LED lights new wolf wheels and quality 235 85 r 16 tires
# You mentioned bulkhead and footwell repairs. did you bondo it up and call it good?
Absolutely not. The bulkhead was ok really but we removed the dash, cut out a small section of corrosion and welded in new metal. Same on the footwells. The battery box was replaced with a brand new one. Work done by qualified experienced in Defender repair.
# Tell me more about the 12j engine?
The British army used it for ages in their vehicles. It is very simple and dependable. And very easy to maintain. I have been 75 mph in the vehicle on i10 on the way to Phoenix and averaged 64 mph over a 75 mile stretch a few weeks ago. measured on a phone GPS. These engines last a very long time if well maintained.
# i don"t believe you!
Check our Youtube channel - Also I have a ticket from a traffic violation that clearly states I was traveling at 65 mph at the time!
# you have a you tube channel?
Yes. It"s a mix of some highly curated and beautifully produced material and some fun simple stuff done impromptu. We will post daily on it once this auction goes live. Sonoran Rovers
#what about the chassis? It is rainy and muddy in Wales and it must be rotten!
The chassis is in really good shape actually. It has been painted by the army many times an had lots of coats but there is no welding and the rear cross member is original. We will show this on youtube and in to anyone who asks to see more pics.
# you havn"t got any feedback. How can we trust you? !
Well that"s a fair concern. This is our first auction as Sonoran Rovers but we run a tour business and have many happy clients we have sourced trucks for over the last 4 years. Our reputation is really important to us. Get in touch for a chat or look at our instagram. There are also videos on there. We can put you in touch with clients who can talk candidly about dealing with us.
#Does this truck need anything?
No it is in great shape. I would drive it anywhere tomorrow.
# is it daily driver ready?
Yes! I use it most days around Tucson. Tucson is a pretty laid back driving experience though. I"m not sure I would love the drama or aggression of some of the Phoenix roads. The truck has great torque so gets off the line fast but doesn"t accelerate as fast as most of the traffic but you catch up by the enxt light and I can keep up with traffic on the back roads. But it gets up to 50mph fast enough to join the freeway and as mentioned above can cruise at 65. I will show a video next week of it doing over 70.
I nearly sold to a young lawyer in Florida and he had concerns about some of those big fast bridges. I guess maybe not suitable if you really need to haul ass.
# but I like to haul ass! what can be done to improve power?
Well if you really had to you could upgrade the engine to a more powerful tdi or V8 or eve electric. That could be done. In fact we ahve a spare 200tdi engine we could install for about 5000 usd.
# can i register in all states?
Yes, although its is an expensive time consuming challenge in CA. The vehicle has been properly imported, has all the correct documentation and has a clean Arizona title.
#Anything else you should tell us?
yes. the truck has no power steering and you need a bit of muscle to maneuver in parking lots but its ok. My wife loves it and she is hardly a weight lifter.
# if i don"t win this auction can I contact you about you building us something like this?
Absolutely. It would be our pleasure. We have fantastic partner shops in the UK and we can source from europe too. We are from the UK and visit regularly. We also work with an absolutely top class trim shop to do custom seats and our new paint show is great.
You seem much more than car flippers. Have you been doing this long?
Thanks! We are very passionate about this We started the business in 2017.
If there is anything we missed here check back with us via instagram or our website or look on youtube. I will drive this truck every day of the auction and post lots of stuff.
Also we have lots more pics and will share with anyone who asks.
Happy bidding folks. Please don"t be shy. bid what you would be happy yo pay for this.
