Vehicle description
The Thunderbird Turbo Coupe originally debuted in 1983 as part of Ford"s new aerodynamic design language. Sharing the Fox platform with the Ford Mustang, Mercury Cougar, Mercury Capri, Lincoln Mark VII, and Lincoln Continental; The Thunderbird Turbo Coupe showed the true potential of that platform. Like the SVO Mustang, the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe is powered by a turbocharged 2.3L 4-cylinder which at the time even surpassed the power outputs of the available 5.0L V8. In 1987, the Thunderbird was facelifted to the body style of this example, featuring sleeker grille-less face, functional hood scoops, and a 45 horsepower increase on manual transmission units. These changes led to the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe being awarded the 1987 Motortrend Car of the Year award.
This particular 1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe was purchased by the current owner in 2012 from the original owner. Since then it"s spent most of its time being stored under cover in a climate controlled garage. Despite being a Wisconsin car, it has NEVER seen snow.
This Turbo Coupe drives like a dream : the engine runs strong, the transmission shifts smooth, and it feels incredibly poised on the road. As a performance car, it can handle the tightest corners, as well as absorb bumps in the road with its power-adjustable suspension.
Besides a few idiosyncrasies, the car is very clean for its age. There are a few paint chips and light scratches, but NO rust. Everything works except for the cassette player and the cruise control. Additionally, the current owner kept up with routine maintenance and repairs when needed. Just last year, every hose under the hood was replaced, as was the rack and pinion. And the A/C blows COLD.
The only reason the current owner is parting with this model is because they"re swapping their car collection for a down payment on a mortgage. But whether the buyer is planning on driving it or admiring it, know that the current owner has maintained the vehicle well.
In 1987, the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe was the pinnacle of Ford"s lineup. Find out why with this low-mileage example!
