Vehicle description
The time has finally come to sell my beloved 1985 GSL-SE. I am the second owner, and have owned it since 1992. Before I get into detail about it, be sure to check out the YouTube video I created for the car. I wanted to make a few points upfront. I have no idea what this car is worth. I understand that it isn’t a 1965 Mustang or a car with 12,000 miles that has sat in a garage for 30 years, but I am in no rush to sell and won’t jump at the first lowball offer. Gorgeous car that turns heads and gets comments everywhere. As much as I am "selling" this car, I am looking for a good home for it. I will only sell the car to someone who is experienced with RX-7’s and will love this car like I have. This car is not customized, highly modified or a show car. It is a well cared for, mostly original, mostly garage kept car that was either my second vehicle or occasionally daily driver. When I describe the condition, consider that the car is 34 years old. When I say "good" condition about an aspect of it, it is through the lens of it being an old, unrestored car. NOTE: The exhaust system was replaced a few years ago with a complete Racing Beat system. The car will not pass any kind of emissions test. Here are some details about the car: Engine/drivetrain : Starts every time, runs strong, still fast and powerful. Shifts smooth. Well maintained with complete records since 1992. Minimal fluid leakage. Idles ok, but not consistent (typical for these cars). Brakes : Good shape. New rotors & pads 20k miles ago. One caliper rebuilt recently when it failed. Tires/wheels : Wheels excellent. Tires: Rear: BF Goodrich Traction T/A, 36k miles. Front: Nankang Toursport, 8k miles. Getting hard to find 205/65/14 size. Electronics/Accessories : Everything good except radio/tape player works only sporadically, rear wiper was removed and defroster does not work, dome light broken. Rear hatch won"t stay up on its own. AC recharged recently, heat fine. Cruise, wipers, PW/all other controls and lights work fine. Door locks will lock but any key can turn driver side lock. Fog lights haven"t worked in years, but I’m sure can be rewired and made operational. CB radio! included from original owner….never used, never removed. Suspension/steering : Handles great. Ride is stiff, like any old sports car. Racing Beat springs, shocks and struts 40k miles ago. Power steering pump failed last year, so currently manual steering. Interior : Very good for its age. Small upper side part of driver’s seat coming apart a little. Expected minor stains and wear in upholstery and carpet. Dash panel repainted a while back, looks good. Body/paint : Very good for 34 years old. From a few feet away, car is an absolute head turner (see photos & video). I can’t believe how gorgeous this car still is…. it cleans up really well! Most trim and logos repainted and look like new. Front end repainted a few years ago after a fender bender. Minor dent on rear panel under spoiler from dumb ex-girlfriend who bumped into it with her jeep. Closer look at body reveals expected minor nicks, scratches and dings. Front air deflector under bumper damaged many times and repainted. Typical dings and chips around bottom of car touched up. Tiny rust on rear fenders, front driver’s fender and front panel removed and fixed. Note: This is a very unique red shade, and I have never found paint that was a perfect match. I even had paint custom mixed for it….and it didn’t match. From a few feet away looks great, but up close places touched up or repaired don’t quite match original red. Underside panel under driver’s door rust damaged. Water must have accumulated somehow. Rust removed, but significant hole remains. I don"t have expertise to attempt to fix. Hardly noticeable without getting under car and specifically looking. To summarize, car is drop dead gorgeous from a distance and turns heads everywhere. . but needs professional body work and paint to become a show car though. Included in sale are many spare parts (including removed emissions equipment), hard sunroof, front bra, Haynes repair manual, old car cover, original owner’s manual, complete service records since 1992, etc. The car is garaged currently in Westwood, New Jersey (North), but is often in Shamong, New Jersey (South). Buyer will pick up in Shamong, but it can be seen in either place by appointment pending my schedule. Ask any questions that you have and I will answer. If video link doesn"t work, copy and paste link address into browser. You will want to see the car in action. ► YouTube Video will open in a new window
