Vehicle description
About this vehicle This 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300D is a project vehicle with updates to the drivetrain. The owner has had it for 1 year. The vehicle is drivable and is not regularly driven. Seller"s Notes I mentioned it needs some repairs, and tackling a project can be daunting if it’s your first time. Thankfully there are a lot of very useful active forums on the internet run by people who love these cars. The repairs will go smoothly if you just follow their lead. I have two primary reasons for selling this car. I don’t have the time I need to devote to it, I work, have school, and a family and I just don’t have time. The second reason is it’s too small for me. I’m 6’5” and feel very cramped driving it. I would not purchase this vehicle if you’re taller than 6’2”. Even then you might bump your head. Vehicle Details This 38 year old Mercedes needs a little love, but that’s ok. If you want to learn how to work on a car there’s nothing better to learn on than old mechanical cars. The most complex part of this vehicle is the vacuum system that several components run on but thankfully that still works. Positives include: it’s a diesel, and on top of that it’s an old German diesel and will likely outlive all its previous owners. For its age it’s in fairly good condition overall, it has some paint peeling and some issues that I’ll get into in a minute but for the most part it’s a solid car. It’s fun to drive! Some negatives: this is a project. You will need to devote some time and money to this car, it needs a new oil cooler, I would replace the radiator and at the very least replace the o-rings on the injectors. There is no radio and the car rattles pretty hard when idling (rough idle from fuel injectors plus worn engine mounts) it’s pretty loud, the kids I bought it off of removed the exhaust and I haven’t had the time to reinstall it. Perhaps the most important issue if this is to be someone’s project/first car is that it doesn’t have airbags. It’s from 1983, they just weren’t concerned back then. Treat this car well and it will repay the favor, these cars have a history of making it well into the late hundreds of thousands of miles on the odometer. They were (and possibly still are?) popular taxis in many countries where maintenance routines aren’t exactly ideal. Mercedes has one in a museum with 2.3 million miles on it. My point is, this car has insane potential. As I mentioned earlier I bought this car off some kids who were using it as a tinker toy. They didn’t mess anything up horribly as far as I know. Actually they did something cool and installed a solar panel in the back to keep the battery charged if you let it sit for a while. I spent many days running it in my driveway and determining what should be done with it. The previous owners had the good common sense to leave all the original parts in the trunk (which is huge by the way), so restoring to original condition shouldn’t be hard.
