Vehicle description
Up for sale is my prized 1982 Delorean DMC-12. Two tone leather interior with 5 speed manual. This has been my labor of love for the past 3+ years. As I near completion on the restoration, I am looking to sell to get ready for my next project. Car is in excellent, but not perfect condition with 5,600 original miles. I have put 300 miles on it in the past 18 months since I have had it registered.
As far as I know, I am the 2nd/3rd owner. The car was purchased and driven in Rhode Island. The original owner last registered the car in 1995. It then sat in a barn (literally) until 2016 when he died. His niece interited the car (and also the tax bill) so she sold it to me. I bought it in April 2017. It was not a running vehicle at that time. I had it shipped out to California where I began a frame off restoration.
If you have done any research about these cars, the key to the car"s health/value is in the frame. Although the outside is stainless steel, the frame was made of laminated steel with an epoxy coating. Over time, the epoxy cracks and then absorbs moisture and then the rust sets in. As a result, many Deloreans look pretty good on top but are literally crumbling on the bottom and are not safe to drive.
When I got the car, I took the body off completely. I removed the engine and all of the suspension parts. I then ground down the frame to bare metal wherever there was rust or decay. I patched/welded some areas where the rust had overtaken and then sealed the whole thing with POR-15 which should keep the frame from developing any further rust long term. This process took about a year. The underside of the car looks "brand new." (see photos)
Other areas of the car that have been restored over the past 3 years:
Fuel System: Completely new. New fuel pump, K-jet system rebuilt, stainless steel fuel lines, all injectors cleaned. New fuel accumulator. Fuel tank completely removed and cleaned by hand. Cooling System: Completely new. New water pump, radiator, new silicone hoses all around, new cooling fans/shroud. New Wings-B-Cool electronic sensor for cooling fans (from DMW-NW) Brakes : Completely new. New master cylinder, new stainless steel brake lines all around. Rebuilt and zinc plated calipers all around. Clutch : New clutch (under 300 miles on it.) Flywheel resurfaced at the time. New master and slave cylinder. New stainless steel clutch line. Wheels/Tires: Orignal wheels sand blasted and powder coated. New General tires all around. Bumpers: Warped front fascia repaired and reinforced. Bumpers painted in period correct Matte finish. Headlight/Tail: Old lights replaced with LED lights up front. Wired so all 4 lights come on for both low and high beams. Tail light boards replaced and upgraded with LED bulbs all around. Air Dam: Upgraded and replaced with DPI "Bullet Proof" stainless steel air dam. Engine Cover: Repainted and old mesh inserts replaced with DeloreanGo Stainless steel inserts with DMC logo. Interior: Old torn leather seats recovered by two-tone leather seats with DMC logo embroidered on seat backs. New leather shift boot. New DMC floor mats. New carpet in "Frunk." Both window motors/regulators have been replaced with new/upgraded units from DMC Houston. Air Conditioning: New AC lines, condenser, evaporator, accumulator. Stereo: Old broken Craig stereo removed (still have) and replaced with Retro Sound stereo that looks period correct but has bluetooth capability for phone and music. Alpine amp added on back deck. All 4 speakers replaced with "Kicker" speakers.
The exterior stainless is in very good shape. There are some small imperfections and dings that are easily repaired, but I haven"t gotten to yet. When done, a new professional regraining would make the car sparkle like new.
Issues that still need to be addressed: 1. The AC does not work. Everything but the compresser has been replaced. A new compresser with orafice tube and accumulator from DMC Houston is about $250. 2. The headliner needs replacement: A new set of headliners (that clip into place) cost $599 from DMC Houston. 3. There is a crack in the dashboard. Could be repaired by a car upholstery shop. Or a new dash from DMC Houston is $299.
Other than that, the car is in terrific shape. It could be used as a weekend cruiser or a daily driver. The few outstanding issues that remain can be fixed for about $1,000 for the DIY"er or for a bit more for someone who "outsources" the work.
For anybody who has never been in one, driving a Delorean is not about speed. It"s about style. You can"t drive anywhere without turning heads. Don"t expect to go to the gas station to get fuel without answering questions from several interested people.
If you are interested in owning what is likely the most recognizable car in history, then let me know if you have questions. As you can see by what I"ve listed here, considerable time and money has been put into the project. The price is fairly firm.
You can definately find Deloreans for sale for less money but often times the underside of the car is not in the same condition.Feel free to ask questions before bidding. I would be happy to post additional photos of areas in question.

P.S. The HoverBoard seen in the photos is included in the sale. (No it doesn"t actually fly)
