Up for auction is an incredibly well preserved and original 1982 Chevrolet C-20 Silverado crew cab long bed with a 5.9 liter 12 valve Cummins engine conversion. This truck started life in California before making its way to the Idaho/Montana region and remained with the original owner until 2017. The truck started life with a 6.2 naturally aspirated Detroit Diesel engine, but the original owner found it to be very under powered (as do most people) and installed a 454 big block sometime in the early 1990s. The 454 had the power he wanted, but the fuel economy was unfavorable. In the early 2000s he decided to install the 12 valve Cummins engine. The Cummins engine is a remanufactured 6BT-A unit and came complete from Cummins with the Holset turbo and all fuel injection parts. The unit is rated at 160 horsepower at 2,500 RPM per the original data plate on the timing cover. This is an early variation of the 12 valve and is non-intercooled featuring the VE-44 rotary injection pump. The original TH400 was rebuilt at the time of the install and a shift kit was installed to increase line pressure. An Allison torque converter was also installed at this time. This is one of the most well executed engine swaps I have seen. The overall height clears the hood with ease and the firewall is untouched. The core support is completely intact and houses the oversized radiator with plenty of clearance. The odometer was replaced at the time of the drivetrain overhaul and reads 17,270 miles today. The body is believed to have around 100,000 miles.
The interior of this C-20 is all original and shows well for its age. The seats are in great condition aside from a small slit on the driver"s side seat bottom as shown. The carpets are worn in the front and could be replaced. The rear carpet is in excellent shape. The vinyl dash pad is cracked in several areas beneath the carpeted cover. All of the factory gauges are working and the dual tank switch works as well. The A/C system is completely intact, however it could use a charge. The cruise control is not working.
The body of this C-20 is truly incredible. This is one of the most well preserved square body pickups I have seen. The panel alignment is very even and symmetrical throughout. The paint appears to be all original aside from a small area of the passenger rear bedside near the taillight that seems to have been blended at some time, however it is nearly undetectable. The truck does have its fair share of small dings and little nicks/scratches throughout, but no major body damage otherwise. I would call this truck 99.99% rust free, the only trace of rust being a few small blisters near one of the door bottom drains as shown. The rockers, cab corners, floor pans, bed floor, door bottoms, roof seam and firewall are all rock solid and rust free. The undercarriage is very dry and rust free with only minor surface rust on the frame and suspension components. Many of the factory decals and chalk markings remain under the hood and in the door jambs.
The truck is fitted with a Tommy Lift 1000 series lift gate and it functions flawlessly. The lift is removable. Unfortunately the original tailgate is long gone.
This truck runs and drives as though it was equipped this way from the factory. The only noticeable difference between this truck and a completely stock one is the shift quality due to the shift kit installed. The shifts are firm and compliment the torque from the 12 valve very well. The ride quality is very nice and smooth.
