Japanese sport coupes are one of the fastest appreciating collector car genres today. If you"re into Toyotas, Celicas, convertibles, or just rare and unique classics, this one is worth a serious look, especially at the reduced price we"ve offered this example.
This is 1 of only 500 1980 Celicas contracted by Toyota to Griffith Motor Corporation to be converted into the Sunchaser targa convertible. And by all educated estimates, it is 1 of less than 100 still in roadworthy condition today, so it is a very rare find. With Toyota"s blessing, these cars were an engineered effort, including reinforced A-pillars and front windshield frame, reinforced fiberglass targa top, structurally rigid roll bar, and plenty of undercarriage steel bracing and gussetting. In fact, these modifications added $3,000 (in 1980 dollars!) to the $7,000-$8,000 MSRP (depending on model and equipment), making this a very expensive option and creating an exclusive club of Celica owners. Just the targa top alone is worth thousands of dollars today because they are virtual unobtanium on the open market.
* This particular car has been exceptionally well-maintained, and has less than 90k original miles. * The legendary (and virtually indestructible) 20R 4 cylinder idles smoothly and runs reliably at all speeds and all conditions. * EVERYTHING on this car works, down to the original AM/FM stereo, every dash light, even down to the original digital clock. * Maintenance in the past 5 years includes:
* * New clutch, throw-out bearing, and slave cylinder * * Rebuilt carburetor * * All 4 shocks * * New springs * * New exhaust * * All new belts and hoses * * 4 new tires
* Also included are receipts for new parts/repairs completed * A Haynes service manual specific to Toyota Celicas is included, along with * Other historical information and Celica/Sunchaser-specific literature.
* To answer a couple of anticipated questions, it doesn"t have power steering or AC (doesn"t need either, frankly).
This car starts easily, the 5 speed shifts smoothly into all gears, and it drives and brakes exactly as a classic of this vintage should. The professionally-applied red paint is a color change (originally a copper/cinnamon color), and the car is 99% rust-free and is as solid an example as you"ll ever find. This is important, as finding one of these at all is rare enough, much less finding one with all original body panels, floors, trunk, etc. The factory luggage rack even still retains its original oak wood strips.
This is a reliable classic that can be driven anywhere with confidence. You"ll be VERY hard-pressed to find one nicer, especially at this price point. And yes, it gets TONS of attention at any car show, cruise night, or gas station. Be prepared to answer LOTS of questions about it! Please take the time to review all the pictures on our website (listed above), then call us if you have other questions.
* *READ THIS* * We can help make all shipping arrangements to put the car in your driveway via a reasonable and safe company that we use, but buyer is responsible for those costs. I"m easy to talk with and will tell you everything I can about the car. Obviously, this car doesn"t come with any kind of warranty, either expressed or implied. I"ve tried to describe the car in generous detail, however, I can"t possibly cover everything that every buyer might want to know, so please reach out and ask questions. A $500 non-refundable deposit is due within 3 business days of auction close, and the balance is due within 7 days of auction close, no exceptions unless otherwise agreed upon. Vehicle does not leave our possession until full payment has been verified. Neither I, nor the car, have anything to hide, and pre-purchase inspections are both welcomed and encouraged. Please have all of your questions answered and permissions granted before offering/buying this car. We take the auction process seriously, and so should you.
