• One owner local Lincoln, purchased 09/17/1979 • Sold new at Wichman Mercury/Lincoln in Farmington Missouri • 89,133 actual miles • Final model year for big Lincolns • Pillared hardtop • 400 CID Cleveland V-8 engine (code S, the only engine option for Lincoln in 1979) • C-6 three-speed automatic transmission (code U) with 2.47 gearing (code B) • Original Wedgewood Blue exterior (code 34) and matching leather and vinyl exterior (code EB) • Air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power front seats, power locks, power sideview mirrors and rear window defroster
In 1979, the downsizing trend spread from General Motors to some of its competition but for Lincoln, it was still a year away.
Made in April 1979, this example was made in Lincoln’s Wixom, Michigan facility (VIN code Y). It was shipped to the St. Louis, Missouri sales region (DSO code 42) and sold new on 09/17/1979 at Wichman Mercury/Lincoln in Farmington, Missouri and has been a one local owner ever since.
Dressed in original Wedgewood Blue (code 34), the paint and trim are in overall very good original order, including the Diamond Blue full Valino vinyl roof (code V5), however there are small blemishes where the vinyl roof meets the metal below the back window. The body is straight, the engine bay is in great original order, the chrome bumpers look great and fit tightly to the body.
This big blue boat rolls on Cyclone white stripe radials, size 225/75R15 at all four corners. Each one is mounted on a steel wheel, topped by a full-width wheel cover. All the wheels and tires are in very good condition.
Under the hood is Ford’s 400 CID Cleveland V-8 engine (code S). The motor is bolted to a Ford C-6 three-speed automatic transmission (code U) and backed by a 2.47:1 rear end (code B). Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power locks, power sideview mirrors, power front seats and rear window defroster.
Inside, the car is a Wedgewood Blue leather and vinyl exterior (code EB). The front and rear bench seats, complete with fold-down center armrests. The blue carpet is in good original order while the headliner is in very good order. A two-spoke steering wheel is in great shape. The inner door panels and dashboard are all in very good condition but the fuel gauge is inoperable. A column-shifter and a factory AM/FM radio completes the interior.
To separate itself from the Mark IV, the two-door Continental/Town Coupe adopted a fully pillared roofline with a square opera window in the C-pillar. In place of the pillared hardtop shared with the Mercury Marquis and Ford LTD, the four-door Continental/Town Car adopted a wide B-pillar; to distinguish itself from the Cadillac Sixty Special Brougham; Town Cars were given the oval opera window introduced on the Mark IV. Along with the styling upgrades, 1975 Lincolns received substantial upgrades to the braking system. Designed by Bendix, the Lincoln Continental became one of the first American cars equipped with a four-wheel disc brake system (as an option).
For 1979, the interior underwent further updating, as the Mercury-sourced dashboard received additional wood trim.
Competition to this Lincoln in 1979 includes Buick’s Electra Limited, Cadillac’s Fleetwood Brougham, Chrysler’s New Yorker, Mercury Grand Marquis and Oldsmobile’s 98 LS Sedan.
