Vehicle description
This is a rare and up and coming collector! There was only 1377 Pontiac Can Am produced, and of those only 43 with the 403 Oldsmobile V8. This Can Am has the original 403 and is well appointed with options that included . . .
Power Drivers front seat bucket seats with a center console Power trunk button AM/FM/ 8 Track stereo Power Windows and door locks Air Conditioning Power steering Upgraded performance suspension Power disc brakes And Of course the Grand La Mans Sport Coupe Can Am Package stripe, duck tail spoiler, and shaker hood.
I just serviced the cooling system that included the radiator, all new hoses, thermostat, new belts. Installed a new fuel filter, plugs, cap, rotor, air filter New battery All new Cooper tires Oil change new A/C Compressor Bearing- system still requires leak testing and charging.
The engine starts right up! idles smooth and shift through all of it"s gears without issue. Drives through afternoon traffic without getting hot, and you don"t have to play with the gas pedal to keep her running, There is no smoke on start up and no odd noises. There are a couple of oil leaks, but not major.
The front coils are soft and have 104,000 miles on them. In the trunk I have new coil springs, upper and lower ball joints, bushings, and an idler arm. This was going to be my next project. The car drives straight, but if your going to replace the springs you might as well do the control arms while there out.
Brakes are fine 40%
Interior is in good condition, but has some incorrect items. Steering wheel is aftermarket, there is an aftermarket stereo, but an original radio is in the trunk. Also arm rest should be red, not black as well as the glove box. I have some of the items in the trunk as i have been collecting items for the restoration.
Okay now for the body. . .
As shown in the photos there is rust in the drivers door. I have had this looked at and my body shop feels that they can replace that area with steel, The bottoms of both doors are solid, but require a good sanding and rust preventative treatment. The front floor pans of the Can Am were replaced, but I feel they could have been done better. The pans are spot welded in and the floor covered in sound deadener.
There is evidence that the car was involved in a left rear collision based on bumper damage and looking inside of the trunk. However not a lot of Bondo was used from what I can see. The body is fairly straight and a good paint job/decal kit would bring this Can Am back to the glory days.
It is estimated that only 600-800 of these Pontiac Can Am are still on the road. This is a great investment vehicle to store, or restore. I"m not trying to scare anyone, but I am trying to be as accurate and honest as possible.
