Vehicle description
1977 MGB Up for sale is an exceptional example of an MGB. Virtually all aspects of this car have been redone and this car has several unique features hard to find in others. First off, the car spent most of its life in California and then Tennessee. The body and underside are completely rust free. No damage nor body filler anywhere. Panels are straight and tight. This a unibody car so this is extremely important. The car (and engine bay) were painted silver about 3 years ago. Paint is in good shape although there are some minor touch ups needed. If you know MGs, you will recall that in 1974, there were two major changes made to the car to meet US regulations – 1 st , the beautiful chrome bumpers and grille were replaced with huge unsightly “rubber” bumpers. 2 nd – the ride height was raised about an inch and a half. Pre 1974 examples command much higher prices for this reason. This particular MG is a 1977 but has been converted back to its former glory with new Moss chrome bumpers, chrome honeycomb grilles and ride height lowered back to original spec. I paid $2,500 just to have this conversion done and have pictures documenting this process. When I purchased the car the drivetrain was fine but if you know MGs, you will also know that the car absolutely needs the Leyland electric overdrive which was an added option to maintain todays highway speeds. Otherwise, the engine RPMs are too high at even 60mph. This overdrive requires a different transmission so I had a completely rebuilt transmission and overdrive (sourced from Quantum mechanics) in Connecticut installed which I have paperwork for. There is roughly 5k of mileage on them since. I also had the overdrive switch placed on the center console for a nifty engagement (see pictures). On mechanics, the engine was removed and completely gone over from tip to tail, cleaned, tuned, painted by a MG specialist. I have a full list of work done and pictures as well. Highlights of work done are timing, valves, camshaft, head, ignition wires, coil, clutch plate, valve cover, electronic ignition, alternator, battery, Weber carburetor, radiator fans, heater core, air and fuel filter, belts and hoses, thermostat, ignition cut of switch and more. All gaskets and fluids replaced and maintained as well. All of the electrical and gauges work perfectly (even the clock). The speedo wire does need tightening (needle shakes when driving). Replaced manifold with Moss headers and Monza exhaust. The steering is tight as the suspension was completely rebuilt and powder coated new rack, bushings, springs, bearings, shocks, brake lines, rotors, calipers, etc. Mileage shown at 57k but I have no way to verify that. Interior – new door cards and handles, new foot box and rear panels, and most importantly I rebuilt the seats (new foam and straps and brand-new leather seat covers from England). These were not cheap but look much better than the old vinyl. The soft top is in decent condition (a little scuffing on the rear window) and I have the rear tonneau cover as well. The dashboard is in good shape except for a small crack on top. I also have the “heavy Mat” MG custom floormats. Radio is updated Blue tooth capable. Leather wrapped steering wheel. The wheels have been upgraded to 15 inch "Rostyle" rims. The rear tires are in good shape bit the fronts should be replaced at some point. Hood struts and heat / sound deadening as well. The British sports cars are rising in popularity and collector value. This one can be driven anywhere and often or saved for those summer cruises and car shows. I have gotten so much enjoyment from this car but need to sell it due to space. Overall, I would say its not quite “show quality” but almost. Would not need much to get there. I am asking 12.5k for the car but have much more than that into it. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any inquiries and/or requests for more photos. 516-972-1564.
