“Dressed in factory correct Sable Black (code 19), the car’s paint and trim are in overall excellent condition, with a few minor blemishes visible upon closer inspection. The car’s body is straight and solid, the battery appears new, the cargo area is in good, original order and the engine bay is very tidy. Note that this example is bereft of one of the 1970’s most popular features, a vinyl roof. Inside, the car’s Black Sierra Grain Leather interior (code 192) is offset by swaths of brown wood on the inner door panels and across the expansive instrument panel, which all look great. The split front bench and full rear bench seats are in very good condition, as are the matching carpet and headliner above. A pair of handles on the backsides of the front bench help with ingress and egress and are an echo of features found in rear seats of 1930s and 1940s Cadillacs. • Factory Black Eldorado and Blue plate California car (Ca Pt: 936-SBV) • Next-to-last model year for big Eldorados • Factory correct Black Sable exterior (code 19) • Black Sierra Grain Leather interior (code 192) • 425 CID V-8 engine with four-barrel carb (VIN code S) • Turbo Hydramatic 425 three-speed automatic transmission and 2.73:1 gearing • Front-wheel drive • Automatic Climate Control, variable-ratio power steering, Hydro-Boost power four-wheel disc brakes, electronic cruise control, power windows, power sideview mirrors, power locks, 50/50 split power front seats with dual armrests • New tailpipe and resonator, tinted quarter windows and rear glass • Spare tire and jack and original radio included
Few things said, “You’ve arrived” during the 1970s more than driving a Cadillac Eldorado and even more stratospheric arrivals were best done in black models, like this factory black ’77 Cadillac Eldorado. This was the next-to-last model year for the land yacht and 1977 marked Cadillac’s 75th Anniversary. Note this car still has its blue California license plates and is still sold on a California title with the title matching the blue plate.
This example was made during the first week of March 1977 in General Motors’ Detroit, Michigan assembly plant (VIN code Q). This example left the assembly line with a Dual Comfort 50/50 front seat. The rear window and quarter glass have been tinted.
Dressed in factory correct Sable Black (code 19), the car’s paint and trim are in overall excellent condition, with a few minor blemishes visible upon closer inspection. The car’s body is straight and solid, the battery appears new, the cargo area is in good, original order and the engine bay is very tidy. Note that this example is bereft of one of the 1970’s most popular features, a vinyl roof.
The car rolls on American Classic wide whitewall tires, size 235/70R15 at every corner. Each tire is mounted on a steel wheel topped by a full factory wheel cover. The wheel covers are all in near excellent condition while the tires are in very good order.
Under that gigantic hood rests Cadillac’s 425 CID V-8 engine with a four-barrel carburetor (VIN code S). Backing the motor is GM’s Turbo Hydramatic 425 three-speed automatic transmission for front-drive vehicles, with a 2.73:1 final drive. Driver convenience features are plentiful: the new-for-’77 Automatic Climate Control, variable-ratio power steering, Hydro-Boost power four-wheel disc brakes, electronic cruise control (with Resume and Advance buttons), power windows, power sideview mirrors, power locks, Dual Comfort 50/50 front seat with two center fold-down armrests with a six-way power seat adjuster for the driver and a power antenna. The factory air conditioning is complete but is currently inoperable at the clutch and the rear power antenna is missing. The car features a new resonator and tailpipe and there’re a spare tire and jack in the trunk and also included with the factory radio.
The massive, flat passenger floor looks even larger when finished in black. A typical, two-spoke Cadillac steering wheel is present. The black instrument panel presents minimal instrumentation – a ribbon-style speedometer and a fuel gauge. Every other major engine function was covered by warning lights, as was usual during the Disco Era. A column-mounted shift lever and a retro-style AM/FM radio complete the interior.
For 1977, the Eldorado received a new grille with a finer crosshatch pattern. New vertical taillamps were relocated to the bumper-fender extensions. New “Eldorado” block-lettering appeared on the hood face and new rectangular side marker lights with “Eldorado” block-lettering replaced the “Eldorado” script on the rear fenders.
Competition to this Eldorado in 1977 included BMW’s 633CSi, Buick’s Riviera, Chrysler’s New Yorker Brougham Coupe, Lincoln’s new-for-1977 Continental Mark V, Mercedes-Benz’s 450SL, Oldsmobile’s Toronado, Rolls-Royce’s Corniche and Stutz’s Blackhawk.
If you’re a land yacht fan, you couldn’t do much better or bigger than this Eldorado in the 1970s. It was a pinnacle of luxury, comfort and opulence during a decade renowned for being self-centered.
