Vehicle description
This 9/76 MGB has been partially restored over the last three years. The current owner has known the car for about 10 years as it sat in his neighbor’s back yard under various covers for several years. Eventually the neighbor passed, and he purchased the car from the estate with just over 67,000 miles, which is believed genuine. This vehicle has absolutely no rust as the photos will show. This year of rubber bumper does have a rear anti roll bar fitted. The car is being sold in favor of something with A/C and long distance capabilities. With the MGB in our shop, we proceeded to remove the engine and transmission and renew the clutch and reseal the front and rear of the engine. Twin carbs and an earlier manifold along with a complete Pacesetter exhaust were swapped for the original Stromberg. The carburetors have a slightly richer needles installed. The engine bay was detailed and cleaned. All new hydraulics, including both master cylinders and slave cylinders along with brake and clutch hoses were installed. All shoes and pads were replaced. Most suspension rubbers and bushings were also replaced. Engine mounts and transmission mounts were replaced, along with the transmission shift boot and anti rattle plunger. The cooling system was overhauled with water pump, radiator, and hoses replaced. An aftermarket 14” single puller electric fan replaced the original dual pusher fans as one had died and the other squeaked. The fuel system saw a new SU electric fuel pump and fuel tank with sender installed. The EVAP system was simplified as a 1968 MGB would have. This car will NOT pass emission in states requiring it to do so as she has no Catalytic convertor or air pump installed. As the dash had a couple cracks, a dash cover was installed. The complete interior was stripped out, and new sound deadener, carpets, seat foams and webbings, seat covers, sun visors, and all panels replaced with new. With the door panels removed, all door gaskets and window mechanisms received replacement or attention as needed. The windshield gasket was also replaced. A pair of speakers in a box were installed behind the seats. Turn signal switch, head lights switch, and fan switch were replaced. All heater controls and cables were lubricated. A new top with zip-out window along with new tires finished the car for use. The owner drove the car for approximately 600 miles and it was found that the cylinder head was cracked. So the decision was made to pull the engine and a complete rebuild was commenced. New 9:1 compression pistons, valves, double springs, camshaft, gears, chains, bearings, and other items were installed. The new head was magnafluxed and skimmed, giving an effective compression ratio of 9.5:1. The distributor was rebuilt with electronic ignition and a new alternator and rebuilt starter were installed. The carbs were retuned to suit the new engine and this MGB has good pep. The car does have flaws- the paint is about 80% original and will need to be resprayed to be perfect. There are a number of dings throughout. The transmission is an overdrive unit, however, as the owner doesn’t drive the car much or use it on the Interstate, it has not been diagnosed as to why it does not engage. Suspicion is that it is either the OD switch or solenoid, as the fluid was drained into the unit on reassembly. Currently she is showing exactly 68,000 miles and the engine has 340 miles since rebuild. She will be sold with a fresh oil change. Receipts will be provided and are in excess of $25,000.
