Vehicle description
About this vehicle This 1974 Volkswagen Thing Acapulco is an original. The owner has had it for 5 years. The vehicle needs work and is not regularly driven. Seller"s Notes Enjoy. . Vehicle Details The Volkswagen THING was sold in America for only 2 years, there were some slight changes made between these 2 years such as improved rear air boxes and relocated side mirrors. In Mexico these cars were built and sold for more years than the American versions. Americans who visited the Las brisas hotels in Mexico were given a special version of these cars to drive around while on vacation Wich inspired a US market version of the Acapulco Thing. this factory special US limited edition VW thing was only available in 1974 There were reportedly only 400 US Acapulco versions made and sold by Volkswagen dealerships in America. This very Rare and authentic Acapulco version sold, comes with the ultra rare and desirable surrey Top. It also has factory running boards and original blue and white theme body paint . All US Acapulco versions had running boards and we only available in the Blue and white theme paint and screen printed striped material for seats and top Parts for this car is surprisingly easy to find and available as many, if not most of the parts are interchangeable with other VW air cooled Ghia, Nug and Van models. Interior parts such and seats and tops and other "thing specific" parts are available through the thing shop online . The wheels are Jackman big 5. I purchased this car as a restoration project but haven't got around to it yet due to other home life events and long work days. . The engine seems to run strong and really seems faster than other things I have owned in the past. I am not 100% sure if this engine isn't larger in bore than the stock 1600 or if it has been tuned , this is the way I received it . The floorpan is typically rusted and has some holes and weak spots. The lower rocker panels are rusted out and need replacing as well. The rear fenders are rusted where they attach to the body. Other than the rust mentioned above the rest of the body seems pretty solid and may only require light sanding and paint work. You also may need front door hinges that accommodate the mirrors (Acapulco specific and stainless versions are available through the thing shop) I have also included a set of window curtains but they are in very poor condition and frames are heavily rusted. I am also including a set of big 5 steel wheels , I think they are 14" . Just in case you prefer that look. Ok well, that's about all I can think of to tell you about it. I wish you the best in bidding and I hope this wonderful car goes to a loving Home. Also, I am willing to ship it overseas as long as the buyer pays for all the costs involved in that.
