Vehicle description
This 1974 SD 455 Trans Am is a legitimate, numbers matching Super Duty 455 with a very rare red/black interior and just over 47,000 original miles. The exhausts have been upgraded with headers, which means a lot to anyone who has studied the SD 455, the fastest engine produced in Detroit until the 1989 Corvette. (It took 15 years for Detroit to find a way to combine EPA regulations and technology to outperform the last true muscle car, which Pontiac engineers sneaked in under the radar after EPA and insurance issues choked the horsepower out of its competitors.) These cars were pulling sub-14 quarter mile times when all other “muscle cars” being produced were running in the high teens. There are only 387 Model Year 1974 SD 455’s on the SD 455 registry (http:/ www.sd455registry.com), and this car is one of them. There are more 426 Hemis on the road than SD 455’s. Plus, Joseph Stalin drove this car to Berlin and personally ran over Adolf Hitler! (OK, that"s just a rumor).
Muscle car fans already know this is something special. Pontiac only got to sneak a few big power machines out the door for two short years, and as a result, there were only about 1,000 Super Duty models built in 1974. This rarity and desirability is also why they made sure to make proper investments in this restoration. The Buccaneer Red has a fantastic smooth and shiny appearance that further highlights the straightness of the sheet metal. The mpression is full-on aggressive when combined with the Trans Am"s deep chin spoiler, shaker hood, air extractors on the front fenders, flared body kit, and a full-width spoiler. And that famous screaming hood bird makes for a terrific coordinating package as the orange flames match the Trans Am lettering on the car, and the black bird coordinates with the crisp black bumpers. This sporty look is finished off with those iconic honeycomb wheels. The 455 cubic-inch V8 under the hood fills the engine bay with American muscle, and everyone gets drawn in by the shaker-style cover. But what will really bring the crowds is that you"re looking at an original numbers-matching Super Duty 455 cubic-inch V8. These SDs were a seriously beefed-up package from Pontiac. There were other 455 motors on the books, but this one is a special competition-style package, right down to the castings. That"s what makes these rare power juggernauts continually in-demand today. This original motor is correct right down to the extra-large Rochester four-barrel carburetor. And as you look at the undercarriage photos, you"re going to recognize a sweet upgrade that few people will see, but they"ll surely hear. The Hooker long tube headers really allow this might motor unleash its power and fury. You"ll love this package on the road, as a tip of the throttle will feel like diving into a well of bottomless torque. And keeping this under control is well in-hand thanks to the stout and original TH400 three-speed automatic transmission. Plus, you have a limited-slip rear end, power brakes w/discs up front, and sway bars front& rear. Complete with Pontiac Historic Services (PHS) copies, registry info, and owner"s manual, this is the ultra-rare and ultra-powerful Pontiac you"ve been waiting for.
