In the wake of the 1973 Energy Crisis, Ford’s Maverick subcompact sold well as consumers desired smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles. One of the trim packages available back then was called The Grabber and MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this seldom-seen, actual Maverick Grabber two-door sedan (code 62D, vin code 93). Although mostly original, this Grabber has a few upgrades, including a 302 V-8 under the hood.
Built in January 1974 at Ford’s Claycomo assembly plant in suburban Kansas City, Missouri (VIN code K), this car was delivered to the Seattle, Washington area, (DSO code 74).
Dressed in factory correct Light Grabber Blue (code 3N), the car has been repainted in its original Grabber hue with contrasting white trim. The paint and trim are in overall excellent condition. The car’s body is straight, its engine bay is extremely tidy and the Napa battery appears new. The chrome bumpers with overriders, which were enlarged for 1974, look great. Additionally, this Maverick retains its other Grabber-spec items such as its dual color-keyed racing mirrors with remote left-hand mirror. The trunk is in looks great and has a spare tire mounted on a body-colored steel wheel.
This compact Ford rolls on Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tires, size 215/70R14 in front and 225/70R14 in back. Each tire is mounted on an original Grabber forged aluminum mag wheel with original center cap. The tires show good tread depth and look great while the wheels are in good, original order.
Under the hood is a rebuilt 302 V-8 engine with around 200 miles on it since the rebuild, stated by the previous owner. Several ancillary engine parts are new or rebuilt – starter, alternator, power steering pump, motor mounts, carburetor and radiator. Backing this motor is Ford’s C4 three-speed automatic transmission (code W) and a 2.79:1 rear end (code 3). Driver convenience features include power steering.
Inside, the original, optional high-back Grabber black vinyl seats and matching black headliner look great while the complementing black carpet is in good, original shape. The two-spoke steering wheel is in very good order, as are the inner door panel and dashboard but the heater blower and the amp gauge is inoperable. Other features include a floor-mounted B&M Megashifter and a set of Sunpro ancillary gauges for oil pressure, water temperature and battery voltage, mounted under the dash. Completing the interior is a Pioneer AM/FM stereo with CD player.
For 1974, the Maverick was unchanged except for new even larger federally required five-mph bumpers for both front and rear which required new rear quarter panel end caps. Jumping gas prices and increasing demand for smaller cars resulting from the Arab oil embargo did cause the Maverick to grow in popularity, selling 10,000 more units than the year before. The Maverick Grabber trim package was introduced in mid-1970. In addition to larger tire fitment, the package included graphics and trim, including a spoiler. It was offered from 1970 to 1975.
Competition to this Maverick in 1974 included AMC’s Gremlin two-door, Chevrolet’s Vega two-door sedan, Datsun’s B210 two-door, Dodge’s Colt two-door, Ford’s own Pinto two-door, Honda’s Civic two-door, Mercury’s Bobcat and Comet two-doors, Pontiac’s Astre two-door sedan and Toyota’s Corolla two-door.
As the second-to-last model year offered, this "74 Maverick Grabber is considerably rare, with only 23,502 Grabbers built out of more than three hundred thousand Mavericks produced in 1974. Representing less than eight percent of total production, this Grabber is not only a very seldom seen model, it is also neat little car that maintains most of its originality but is still lots of fun to drive thanks to the V-8 transplant under the hood.
Can still be used as a daily driver or as a great entrant in a car show or cruise night event, stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check this one out.
