Vehicle description
1972 914 1.7 L fuel injected
General upgrades So, new rear springs and shocks all around restored the factory ride height, and the car was no longer in a nose up posture. We did brakes, brake hoses, replaced fuel lines, and, shifter bushings, tune up etc. We got rid of the so called ‘short shift kit” and restored the original long throw shifter for the tail shift transaxle. We also removed the old worn out distributor and funky electronic ignition set up, and restored the car back to factory with a recently rebuilt/remanufactured distributor. This past month, we replaced the old-fragile- wiring harnesses with new harnesses supplied by Jeff Bowlsby . A 914/4 Porsche D-Jet Fuel Injection Harness. AND the 914/4 Porsche Ignition harness. We saved Jeff’s new charging harness in a box, as we did not see any need for replacing the current charging harness. It is still in good shape. It has been fun to take this car out for Sunday drives on a sunny day. I have never taken the car out in the rain. THE ENGINE The engine is the 1.7 L fuel injected engine and always starts right up, is tight & smooth. It does not leak or burn any engine oil. The only thing on the motor which is not OEM are the valve lifters. They are hydraulic lifters. The engine serial numbers do not match the car. On a cold start, the engine cranks up very easily. However, when the engine is cold it idles at around 600 RPM. When the engine warms up, it idles very nicely at 1100 RPM. My mechanic tells me the car probably needs a cold start valve. The engine is very happy and runs very smoothly at 3000 RPM, and can be revved out to 4500 or 5000 RPM very easily. Original tail shifter transaxle. No leaks. Clutch is good and smooth . The Transaxle shifts nicely from 1st to 2nd if you make the shift before the car hits 15 or 20 miles per hour. The shifts from 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th, 4th to 5th are smooth, and fine. . Downshifting from 5th to 4th, 4th to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd are fine. However, the downshift from 2nd to 1st not so good. I usually just wait until the car is fully stopped before shifting into 1st. typical dog leg shift is now much easier with the OEM long throw shifter. Sometimes finding 1 st gear can be vague. So, With the car at a full stop, I shift into Reverse, then back into neutral and then easily find first gear. INTERIOR: Original carpet is worn after 49 years, but in good shape. The Interior courtesy light can manually be turned on and off. It doesn"t come on when doors are opened. The Door panels are in excellent shape. Door handles and window cranks work easily as they should. The Dashboard is in perfect condition. No Cracks or blemishes.
I removed the old funky craig stereo and craig speakers, and replaced them with a Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio and good speakers.
The old and split seat upholstery was removed and replaced with New – factory appearance upholstery.
The Glove box door open and closes fine. Ashtray slides in and out fine. All gauges and gauge lights work . Oil pressure and alternator lights work. Tach and Speedo work . Gauges on center console: charging and temp gauges work. The clock works.
Turn signals work. Horn works. Cigarette lighter works but I am a non smoker. Head lights, Brake lights, side markers, emergency flashers and Reverse lights all work. Headlights go up and down just fine.
Heater blower motor works.
Fan in Fresh air box does not work.
Washer fluid tank holds fluid but I have never used it. Sun visors good. Parking brake good. Seats adjust and tilt fine. Door openers, locks, handles and window cranks all work. One small chip in windshield. The door windows and rear glass are fine. . Windows crank up and down. The Rubber moulding along bottom between dash and windshield is fine, and good shape. THE BODY: No rust inside front trunk. NO rust in rear trunk (Rear trunk lid opens and closes as it should . The . Floor pans are solid, very good. The Battery shelf is solid and may be a little rust below. Like most owners, it’s a good idea to go in annually and clean up any surface rust around the battery. There is some rust, but it is Hard to take pictures down in there. The Targa top is in good condition and latches into place just fine. Front and rear Black bumpers have some dents/dings in them but not rusted. Front and back rubber bumper toppers are a 8 on a scale of 10. Pretty good shape. The rear bumper topper has a very small crack. The PAINT is in good shape. Really nice clear coat. .It does have some scratches, chips, Paint job is 9 years old. The front nose panel and passenger front Fender : The previous owner pointed out that the owner prior to him had replaced the front nose panel and passenger side front fender. It appears the nose panel and front fender are from a later model 914. See Pictures. Driving the car, you would never guess this body work had been performed. The Car tracks straight and true. The front end alignment has been checked out and conforms to factory specifications. So, all I can say is, whoever did the body repair, they knew what they were doing. It’s a solid job. The car tracks straight and true, and handles as it should. ALLOY WHEELS The original factory Pedrini alloy wheels with special chrome caps with Porsche Badge. The car has a set of five Pedrini wheels 15 X 5.5. Tires are Michelin XZX 165sr 15. The Wheels are straight and true. No damage. The paint on the wheels is old and worn, but overall they look pretty darned good. I have always kept the car in my climate controlled garage with a Mitsubishi ‘mini-split / AC/ heat pump. One of the Best investments I’ve ever made. The Car comes with a ’73 914 owners manual.
